Five women were killed in a mass stabbing in April. Speaking after an emergency meeting to address the issue, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced Australia would spend A$925.2 million ($600 million) on a long-term financial support program for victims of domestic violence.
“This is a problem for the whole of society... This is a problem for civil society, it is a problem for the media, it is a problem for all of us,” he said.
Australia will also introduce laws banning the creation and distribution of non-consensual deepfake artificial intelligence-based pornography.
Mr Albanese also announced a series of measures to control pornography on the internet and promote healthier attitudes towards women.
