According to Reuters, the Australian government has just decided to ban the DeepSeek application on all government-owned devices due to security concerns. This decision was made by the Australian Department of Home Affairs, requiring all government agencies to uninstall and block the use of DeepSeek on all systems and devices.
Australia Decides to Ban DeepSeek on Government Devices
Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke said DeepSeek “poses an unacceptable risk” to government technology and the ban was to “protect Australia’s national security and national interest”. However, the ban does not apply to people’s personal devices.
DeepSeek, a Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup, caused a stir in the tech world when it launched last month. The app is said to cost much less to develop than other AI models and uses less sophisticated chips, raising questions about the effectiveness of Western investment in the field.
Australia's decision to ban DeepSeek follows similar moves in Italy and Taiwan. Other countries in Europe and around the world are also considering similar measures against the AI company. Australia also banned the TikTok app from government devices over security concerns.
The decision reflects growing concerns among countries about Chinese-origin technologies, especially amid rising technological competition and geopolitical tensions. Protecting national security and government data is becoming a top priority for many countries around the world.
