Medical news on July 1: The rate of young people with vascular diseases is increasing

Recently, the rate of young people suffering from vascular diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, causing strokes leading to death is increasing.

The rate of young people with vascular diseases is increasing.

Previously, vascular diseases were usually only found in people over 60 years old, the older the age, the more susceptible to the disease. However, recently, alarming numbers of people with cerebral vascular occlusion and stroke have been increasing. What is particularly worrying is that the number of young people with the disease accounts for a significant proportion.

Recently, the rate of young people suffering from vascular diseases, especially cardiovascular diseases, causing strokes leading to death is increasing.

MSc. Le Nhat Tien, General Secretary of the Vietnam Vascular Diseases Association, said that many dangerous vascular diseases can cause serious complications, requiring amputation, and even death.

These are diseases such as peripheral arterial stenosis, aortic aneurysm and dissection. Although there are no specific statistics, in reality, vascular diseases have appeared more in young people in recent years and the level of complexity has gradually increased. The number of patients under 30 years old with myocardial infarction, carotid artery occlusion causing stroke is increasing.

Blood vessels are like a system of pipes that carry blood throughout the body. Vascular disease is a condition that affects the blood vessels, which can affect arteries, veins, or lymph vessels throughout the body.

This group of diseases will affect the blood vessels of the whole body such as the brain vessels (causing stroke), coronary arteries or blood vessels that nourish the heart (causing myocardial infarction, chest pain), the aortic system (chest and abdomen) causing rupture or blockage of blood vessels, the visceral vascular system (manifested in various ways in the liver, kidneys, intestines, etc.) and peripheral blood vessels (causing pain in the lower limbs when walking, ulcers or necrosis of the limbs).

According to Dr. Do Van Chien, Deputy Head of the Cardiovascular Resuscitation Department, 108 Central Military Hospital, the number of young people suffering from stroke or cardiovascular disease (CVD) in the world in general and in Vietnam in particular is increasing.

This consequence largely comes from the inactive, sedentary lifestyle of many young people as well as the lack of awareness of the seriousness of vascular diseases. Therefore, patients with vascular diseases are mostly only discovered when they have serious complications.

Causes of vascular diseases are often due to: Smoking, unhealthy diet, eating a lot of salt and saturated fat; lack of exercise; obesity; high blood pressure and diabetes.

For children or young people, factors that cause over-inhibition or over-stimulation include poor stress tolerance, study pressure, use of addictive substances (especially e-cigarettes and synthetic or natural drugs), negative influences from unhealthy information on the internet, and unhealthy lifestyles (not playing sports, bathing at night, bathing immediately after playing sports, etc.).

In addition, the urbanization process and changes in lifestyle of society, especially young people, also have a significant impact, making these risk factors even more serious.

In Vietnam, many people do not have the habit of going for regular health check-ups. In addition, there are cases where people go for regular health check-ups but the check-ups are superficial and formal, without examining important structures in the body.

Reducing stroke and cardiovascular disease in young people requires a comprehensive approach, including education about risk factors, promoting healthy lifestyles, improving access to health care and early intervention.

To prevent cardiovascular diseases in general and vascular diseases in particular, each person needs to control their own disease risks through lifestyle changes, such as: Do not smoke, both actively and passively, especially electronic cigarettes and addictive substances;

Avoid becoming overweight; limit and reduce the use of red meat and fats, exercise regularly, shower at least two hours before going to bed, avoid showering immediately after playing sports and always pay attention to medical screening methods such as controlling blood pressure and blood cholesterol levels.

All of these changes can significantly reduce the risk of vascular disease and improve overall cardiovascular health. In addition, regular health check-ups are important for early detection of vascular disease.

Overall, vascular diseases are a significant public health concern in Vietnam, requiring comprehensive strategies focusing on prevention, early detection, and effective management to reduce the burden on individuals and the health care system.

Hanoi: 3 new dengue fever outbreaks recorded

According to the Hanoi Center for Disease Control, from June 21 to 28, there were 84 more cases of dengue fever in the city (an increase of 11 cases compared to last week).

Patients are distributed in 20 districts, of which 41 patients were recorded in Dan Phuong district (accounting for 50% of the total number of cases recorded during the week in Hanoi).

Accumulated from the beginning of 2024 to now, Hanoi has recorded 940 cases of dengue fever (an increase of more than 1.5 times compared to the same period in 2023), with no deaths.

This week, 3 new dengue fever outbreaks were also recorded, including 2 outbreaks in Dan Phuong district and 1 outbreak in Bac Tu Liem district.

Cumulatively from the beginning of 2024 to now, the city has recorded 17 dengue fever outbreaks. There are currently 6 active outbreaks, including 4 outbreaks in Dan Phuong district (including: 2 villages of Bai Thap and Dong Van in Dong Thap commune; Phuong Mac village, Phuong Dinh commune; village 3, Thuong Mo commune) and 1 outbreak in Trung Liet ward (Dong Da district); 1 outbreak in Thuy Phuong ward (Bac Tu Liem district).

During the week, the Hanoi Center for Disease Control conducted surveillance at two active outbreaks in Dong Da and Dan Phuong districts.

At the same time, the City Center for Disease Control also coordinated with units to organize surveillance at 8 old dengue fever outbreaks in 2023 in: Yen Nghia Ward (Ha Dong District); Quang Trung Commune (Phu Xuyen District); Dong Xuan Ward (Hoan Kiem District); Tien Phuong Commune (Chuong My District). The results showed that 4/8 outbreaks had insect indexes exceeding the risk threshold.

In addition, localities have also organized 44 environmental sanitation campaigns, checking epidemic prevention in more than 120,331 households and 1,779 other areas (schools, public places, etc.); treated 23,743 water containers with mosquito larvae.

Currently, the hot and rainy weather conditions are very favorable for the development of mosquitoes and disease-carrying larvae. This is also the 5th consecutive week with an increase in dengue fever cases in the city.

The Hanoi Center for Disease Control will continue to closely monitor and promptly detect patients in the community and decentralized medical facilities to grasp the epidemic situation and promptly investigate and handle cases and outbreaks.

Actively monitor the index of larvae and mosquitoes transmitting dengue fever in areas with cases, outbreaks, and high-risk areas to deploy appropriate and timely response activities.

At the same time, continue to monitor newly emerging dengue fever outbreaks and old outbreaks in 2023 to promptly detect infected/suspected cases of the disease to take timely disease prevention and control measures.
