The path to awakening potential

(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - Minister of Construction Tran Hong Minh has just signed Decision No. 335/QD-BXD assigning Project Management Board 85 to prepare a Pre-Feasibility Study Report for the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum Expressway Construction Investment Project, to be implemented in 2025 - 2026.

During his recent visit and working session with the Standing Committee of Quang Ngai Provincial Party Committee, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh also agreed on the policy of implementing the Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway in the direction that the two provinces will take care of site clearance, while the central budget will allocate the construction and installation part. The total investment capital for this expressway is over 35.3 trillion VND.

The entire route is 136km long, the section through Quang Ngai is 58km long, the section through Kon Tum is 78km long. The project scale is 4 complete lanes, each lane is 3.75m wide and 2 emergency lanes, designed speed from 80 - 100km/h. The starting point of the route intersects with the North - South expressway in the east at Duc Pho town, then passes through Ba To district (Quang Ngai) and 2 districts of Kon Plong, Kon Ray (Kon Tum), the ending point intersects with the North - South expressway in the west in Kon Tum city. It is expected that this route must be completed by 2028 at the latest.

If the speed limit is as expected, the 136km distance from Quang Ngai to Kon Tum will only take more than 1 hour by car, without having to go through winding and steep passes like the current National Highway 24.
But perhaps, this highway not only serves to facilitate travel between the two regions, but mainly to awaken the potential that both Quang Ngai and Kon Tum have seen for many years but could not realize due to the distance by ferry. The potential of the sea and the forest will also be realized quickly.

First of all, the tourism potential. Mang Den tourist area is known nationwide as a second Da Lat on the plateau, but traveling is extremely difficult. Visitors from far away take a plane to Pleiku airport, then drive back to Kon Tum 50km, following National Highway 24 for another 70km to reach Mang Den. Visitors traveling by road must pass the extremely dangerous Vi O Lac pass. But when there is a highway, getting to Mang Den by air or road is no problem at all.

If well planned, Mang Den will become an attractive destination because of its cool climate all year round, vast pine forests that are still pristine, and many other check-in points that will satisfy many visitors from near and far. This will also be the most beautiful highway in the Central region, because it will pass through many mountains and rare primeval forests remaining in this northern Central Highlands region.

Another potential is that the transportation of goods from the lowlands to the highlands and vice versa is extremely convenient. Bo Y border gate (Kon Tum), the border junction of Vietnam - Cambodia - Laos, has also been awakened so that Quang Ngai can "connect" with Laos and Cambodia through this border gate.

The Quang Ngai - Kon Tum expressway is expected to become the "guide" to unlock the full potential of Kon Tum and Quang Ngai.
