From the results of the 2024 high school graduation exam, we can see a panoramic picture of the quality of general education nationwide. From there, we can raise issues that need to be adjusted in education policy.
The numbers speak for themselves.
According to statistics, the score distribution of high school graduation exam subjects in 2024 is still similar to that of 2023 and previous years. This year, the average score below 5 in all subjects has improved significantly; including subjects such as Math, History, Physics, which often have relatively large below-average scores. This is a clear improvement compared to previous years, demonstrating the stability and efforts in studying and teaching of students and teachers.
However, the quality of general education has not changed significantly between regions, there has not been any spectacular "usurpation". The top in the quality of general education is still the provinces of the Northern Delta, Ho Chi Minh City, Binh Duong, the provinces of the North Central region... The "lowland" of general education is still in the mountainous areas of the North, the provinces of the Southwest region. The top in the exam score is Vinh Phuc province, second is Nam Dinh, third is Ninh Binh, followed by Binh Duong, Bac Ninh, Ha Tinh, Hai Phong... The localities in the top 10 with a score of 10 include: Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, Ninh Binh, Phu Tho...
The quality of education in some provinces has made remarkable progress. Typically, Tuyen Quang ranked 22nd nationwide, ranked 3rd out of 14 northern mountainous provinces with an average score of 6.75 points; ranked first in the country in the average score of Chemistry and Biology. This achievement was achieved because the Tuyen Quang Education and Training Department has implemented synchronous solutions to improve the quality of mass education; assigned quality targets to principals of affiliated schools; assigned average scores for each subject of the high school graduation exam to units; promoted the activities of the Professional Advisory Group to promptly remove difficulties and obstacles, thereby improving the quality of education of schools... Similarly, An Giang is in the top 10 provinces and cities nationwide with the highest average score and ranked first in the Mekong Delta with 7,024 points. This result is thanks to An Giang province's synchronous implementation of solutions: strengthening the activities of the core council, organizing seminars to improve professional quality, reviewing graduation exams on television...
University admission scores for some combinations increased
Compared to last year, this year's high school graduation exam has 6/9 subjects with increased scores, including Math, Literature, Physics, History, Geography and English, with an increase of 0.06 to 1.04 points. The increase in average scores for each subject has caused the average scores of some university admission combinations to increase. Of which, combination C00 (Literature, History, Geography) increased the most, from 18.97 to 20.95 points. Other combinations such as A00 (Math, Physics, Chemistry); A01 (Math, Physics, English); D01 (Math, Literature, English) also increased their average scores from 0.13 to 0.6. As for combination B00 (Math, Chemistry, Biology), the average score decreased slightly.
With the 2024 high school graduation exam scores, many experts predict that the expected admission scores for groups such as A00, A01, D01 this year will be similar to 2023, that is, scores of 25 or higher for top universities and "hot" majors; while for mid-level universities, the scores will range from 20-24 points, the rest will be from 15-20 points. Particularly, groups with Literature, Geography and History are expected to have a standard score higher than last year by 1-1.5 points or more, that is, the admission score at top schools is expected to be from 25-26 points, while most universities are expected to have an admission score of 21-24 points.
Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the Council of the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, predicted that if there is no major change in the percentage of quotas for considering graduation exam scores, this year's university admission scores will be 1-3 points higher than last year in the groups, in which the groups with Literature, History, and Geography will have the strongest increase in admission scores. According to Ms. Nguyen Thu Thuy, Director of the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Training, the admission regulations create maximum opportunities for students to be admitted. Candidates should not only register for a few wishes, leading to a reduction in the chance of admission. If they have been admitted in the early admission wish, but still want to study in other fields of study or schools that they like more, they should register their wishes appropriately.
