On August 15, the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy (China) announced the 2023 academic rankings of world universities. The top three positions remained unchanged from last year, respectively belonging to representatives from the US: Harvard University, Stanford University and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Mainland China is the standout name, taking a total of 191 places in the top 1,000, marking the first time it has surpassed the US (187 schools). But in the list of the best 100 educational institutions, the US still leads with 38 universities, followed by mainland China with 10 representatives. Tsinghua University holds the highest position at 22nd and is also the highest-ranked school in Asia.

Not only Tsinghua University, all Chinese universities increased their rankings, except for the University of Science and Technology of China, which dropped two places to 64th place. In addition, mainland China also recorded 35 universities entering the top 1,000 for the first time, and Central South University (ranked 95) and Nanjing University (ranked 96) entered the list of the world's 100 best universities for the first time, according to China Daily .

In 2023, 10 Chinese universities will be in the top 100 best universities according to the academic rankings of world universities.

These achievements reflect China’s rise in the field of higher education, University World News noted. Twenty years ago, when the academic rankings of world universities were first published, no representative of this country was in the top 100 and only nine units were in the list of the best 1,000 schools.

China's rise is also a common trend in prestigious global university rankings. For example, the 2024 QS World University Rankings (UK) recorded 71 Chinese universities in the list of the 1,500 best schools, an increase of 20 universities compared to 2021. Of these, there are 5 representatives in the top 100, led by familiar names such as Peking University (ranked 17th) and Tsinghua University (25th).

In the 2023 World University Rankings by the Times Higher Education (UK), China has 95 names appearing in the list of 2,345 leading universities, with 7 representatives in the top 100. Twelve years ago, in 2011, this country had only 6 universities ranked in the list of the world's 200 best universities, with 3 representatives in the top 100.

What to note when studying abroad in China?

The rise in the rankings of Chinese universities and the wide range of job opportunities after returning home are the reasons why more and more Vietnamese students are choosing this country as their destination, instead of traditional markets such as Australia, the US or Canada, according to experts.

The rise in university rankings has made China one of the popular "destinations" for Vietnamese international students.

Specifically, Master Nguyen Duy Viet, Director of Hoa Ngu Study Abroad Company Limited (Hanoi), affirmed that the number of Vietnamese students studying in China has never been as high as it is now. This is the conclusion after Mr. Viet listened to the sharing from study abroad consulting units and Chinese universities.

"Many schools say that most of their scholarship applications come from Vietnam. It can be said that this is a boom year for studying abroad in China when the level of interest is greater than before the pandemic," said Mr. Viet.

However, the sharp increase in the number of international students has also made the admission and scholarship review process more rigorous and competitive. Specifically, many Chinese universities this year require applicants to demonstrate financial resources and have a Chinese proficiency certificate (HSK), although previously very few places required this. With Chinese government scholarships, some schools require candidates to go through 3-4 rounds of review such as interviews and entrance exams.

"Although there are still many schools willing to accept international students without HSK, you will have few options in terms of majors or regions. Therefore, if you plan to study abroad in China, you should start learning Chinese early and achieve HSK4 level or higher," Mr. Viet advised.

According to the director, in addition to familiar majors such as Chinese, Chinese medicine, economics, communications, etc., Vietnamese students studying abroad have recently shown a lot of interest in fields related to information technology and engineering. "The most popular level of study is bachelor's degree, however, postgraduate or short-term programs such as one year of language, one semester of language, summer camps, etc. are also increasingly attractive," Mr. Viet informed.

Sharing more about the labor market, the study abroad expert said that Vietnam has many businesses from Chinese-speaking countries and economies besides China such as Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia..., with diverse fields such as import and export, garment, electronics. In addition, the increasing popularity of Chinese also leads to expanding job opportunities in fields such as pedagogy, translation and interpretation, and tourism.

"There are many opportunities for Vietnamese students to choose to return home. At the same time, although China is a country of a billion people with a large and competitive labor market, those with good qualifications still have the opportunity to stay and work in industries such as import and export at companies with Vietnamese partners, or tourism, education...", Master Viet expressed his opinion.

According to statistics from the Chinese Embassy, in 2022, there will be 27,000 Vietnamese students studying at educational institutions in this country. The above number is double compared to 2018, which was more than 11,000 people.
