On August 19, sharing with VietNamNet , Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung - General Director of Vina T&T Group - boasted that the company only exports fresh durian to China. However, this market has accounted for 20% of the company's total revenue in the past 7 months.
Last year, Vina T&T Group signed an order to export durian to a Chinese partner. This year, the export value of this fruit continues to grow very positively.
"At peak times, we send 1-2 containers of durian to China every day. Currently, the company exports about 10-15 containers of durian, 18 tons/container, each month," he said.
The protocol for official export of fresh coconut and durian to China has just been signed. Mr. Tung informed that the company is ready to export these two products in the last months of the year. He expects that the export value of agricultural products to the Chinese market of the company will increase sharply in the near future.
Mr. Tran Van Duc - Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ben Tre Coconut Investment Joint Stock Company - revealed that some partners in China have started to contact to learn about and visit the factory and coconut products. He is confident that his company can meet the requirements of raw material areas as well as packaging facilities from China because he has experience exporting fresh coconuts to many high-end markets in the world.
Statistics from the General Department of Customs show that by the end of July this year, our country's fruit and vegetable exports earned nearly 3.9 billion USD, a sharp increase of 25.9% over the same period last year.
Exports to China alone reached nearly 2.5 billion USD, an increase of 25% over the same period in 2023. The Chinese market accounted for 64.1% of the total export turnover of our country's fruit and vegetable industry in the first 7 months of 2024.
Among agricultural, forestry and fishery products exported to the billion-people country, vegetables and fruits rank first in terms of turnover. At the same time, China is also the largest customer of Vietnamese vegetables and fruits.
Currently, our country has 14 agricultural products officially exported to the Chinese market, including: fresh durian, sweet potato, dragon fruit, longan, rambutan, mango, jackfruit, watermelon, banana, mangosteen, lychee, passion fruit, frozen durian, fresh coconut.
Discussing the potential for exporting fruits and vegetables to China, Mr. Dang Phuc Nguyen - General Secretary of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association - said that with a population of more than 1.4 billion people and a growing middle class, China is a large market for many types of Vietnamese fruits and vegetables.
Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the General Department of Customs of China signed an additional protocol to export frozen durian and fresh coconut to this market. Our country's fruit and vegetable industry can earn several hundred million USD more each year, and then the turnover will increase every year.
Mr. Nguyen analyzed that in the future, China will increase the import of frozen durian with separated segments for processing because it will reduce a huge amount of money related to transportation costs due to removing the shell from the source.
Vietnamese frozen product exporters also have less pressure to comply with plant quarantine regulations (potential pests associated with fresh fruit) and can sell deep into mainland China thanks to long storage times.
Meanwhile, Vietnam has nearly 175,000 hectares of coconut land, with an output of about 2 million tons and is the 7th largest producer of this fruit in the world. The growing areas are mainly concentrated in the central coastal provinces and the Mekong Delta.
And like durian, China is one of the largest coconut consuming markets in the world. Therefore, being allowed to officially export to China opens up great opportunities for the Vietnamese coconut industry. This is a market with very close geographical distance, short transportation time and low cost, so the product will be competitive with other countries.
In addition, our country also has great export potential for grapefruit, chili, spices, etc., Mr. Nguyen said.
With frozen durian and fresh coconut having "visas" to enter the Chinese market, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development calculates that the export turnover of these two products could reach 600-800 million USD this year and soon be on the list of agricultural products exported worth billions of USD.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the list of fruits being negotiated to open to the Chinese market also includes grapefruit, avocado, custard-apple, and rose apple.
