Chinese media reported on October 24 that Chinese Defense Minister Li Shangfu had been dismissed but did not give a reason, according to the South China Morning Post . The official was also removed from his position as a State Councilor. The decision was approved by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
Mr. Li Shangfu was removed from his positions as State Councilor and Minister of National Defense.
Mr Lee has not been seen in public since late August and speculation has been rife over the past few weeks. He only took over as defence minister in March. There is no word on who will replace Mr Lee.
Li is the second minister to be dismissed in recent months. Qin Gang was replaced as foreign minister in July, making way for Wang Yi. Qin had not been seen in public for some time before his dismissal, and no reason was given for his removal.
News of Mr. Lee’s removal came just days before a Pentagon delegation arrived in Beijing for a regional security forum, paving the way for long-stalled high-level military dialogue between the United States and China.
Also on October 24, CCTV reported that Chinese Minister of Science and Technology Wang Zhigang was dismissed and replaced by the ministry's Party Secretary, Yin Hejun. Finance Ministry Party Secretary Lan Fo'an replaced Finance Minister Liu Kun.
Also in the decision on October 24, the Standing Committee of the National Assembly dismissed Mr. Qin Gang from his position as State Councilor.
