In this world, I fear the most is the title!

At any age I am afraid of rumors.

Up to this point, are you confident with the title "hundred billion director" that the audience has given you?

In this world, what I fear most is titles (laughs). Many audiences ask whether we should call Ly Hai director, actor or singer. I answer that calling him "anh", "mister", "uncle" is fine, as long as you remember the name Ly Hai.

I don't care what the audience calls me, as long as I am welcomed with respect wherever I go. For an artist, being remembered and loved by the audience is happiness.

Ly Hai is loved by the audience for his simple and approachable personality.

- People say Ly Hai makes movies without focusing on revenue?

I am a student of the Academy of Theatre and Cinema. However, after graduating, I pursued singing. After more than 20 years of holding the microphone, I have now returned to cinema - the profession I studied and the dream of realizing what I have learned. Since I started making films, I have not focused too much on sales because being able to do the job is a joy. Up to this point, I still maintain that mindset, as long as God blesses me to break even.

I just hope that the audience will not regret the 2 hours spent in the theater watching Ly Hai's movie. And the important thing is that I hope everyone will feel Ly Hai's progress in each part of the movie so that I know I'm not "stagnating in place".

- Although your films are successful, it seems that they still haven't received a worthy award!

I don’t put much emphasis on winning this or that award for my work. Before starting a project, I always determine which path I am taking and know the market segment I am aiming for.

If it is a competition film, there must be a different plan, and if it is an entertainment film, there will be a different direction. With Lat Mat, I aim more towards entertainment. However, my films always have humanity in each story.

Ly Hai always wants to convey humanity in his films.

- Recently, Ly Hai has been involved in some bad rumors. Does this affect you much?

Everyone is afraid of false rumors, but luckily, those rumors have nothing to do with who I am. One fine day, I was in the studio doing post-production for a film when there was a rumor that Ly Hai was arrested for gambling.

I thought that information was not worth paying attention to. Who would have thought that a few days later the rumor spread so quickly that I had to speak up to correct it. Many friends also called me to say that they had never seen Ly Hai hold a card in his hand before, and that he was arrested for gambling was unbelievable (laughs).

- So that means at this age you are still afraid of rumors?

Of course, it's the same at any age! Ly Hai himself works with a view that he never wants to be involved in scandals. I just hope the audience will always understand this.

Will never return to music

The released film projects have all been successful and made an impression. Is it time for Ly Hai to return to music?

I think Ly Hai will never return to music (laughs). Firstly, I don't have time because I've devoted it all to movies. Secondly, I've given up singing for a long time. Imagine a football player who only needs 3 months off the stage, when he comes back he'll be very confused, the same goes for singers. I've given up music for 7, 8 years so I really don't dare to confidently return to the stage.

Ly Hai confirmed that he will not return to music.

- Have you lost your passion for music?

I have always been passionate because music has been in Ly Hai's blood for more than 20 years. Many times when I pass by the stages, I remember the beautiful memories of a glorious time. However, remembering is one thing, but for now, I still have to accept to withdraw.

- Maybe it's because young singers today are so talented and develop so quickly that you're so self-conscious?

Not only in art but in any profession, the old bamboo will grow new bamboo. When we feel that we are not healthy enough, and have no more energy, we should give way to the younger generation, that is the right thing to do. Young people today have a hundred thousand times more opportunities than Ly Hai's generation. In our time, artists were only known by word of mouth. Only when they became famous did they get to appear in newspapers or on television.

Nowadays, when social networks are developed, you can promote your own image. Many people even become stars in just one day. That is a good thing. However, young people also need to pay attention because when they become famous too quickly without preparing for the next steps, they can easily stumble and fall very painfully. If they are not brave enough to stand alone, they need to focus and practice steadily to be worthy of what they receive from the audience.

- In your time, how did you prepare when you first became famous?

In our time, everyone was the same and had to practice singing every day. In the old days, everyone had to sing live, so whether they sang well or badly was immediately revealed. If they sang badly, the audience would chase them off the stage. In those days, the audience's applause was the measure of success.

I still remember in 2002, when I had just finished writing the lyrics for the song "When a man cries", I confidently performed it. Although I had not sung it anywhere, when I sang it on stage, the audience was in an uproar and asked me to sing it over and over again 10 times. At that time, I knew for sure that this song would be a hit. After that, I recorded it, made a music video and started promoting it. I was lucky to have songs that the audience commented that they loved after just one listen.

- After many years working in the arts, has your perspective on the profession changed?

When we are young, everyone has moments of rashness and impetuosity, and so did I. After my failures, I learned from my experiences and decided to spend more time on myself. After getting married, the audience saw that Ly Hai rarely appeared in public because that was when I spent time with my family. Up until now, the audience always assumed that the artist world was often noisy, so I was very afraid of that.

Ly Hai - Minh Ha's happy little family.

I have a house in Da Lat, where my family often returns on special occasions. No work, no phone signal, no worries and troubles. At this time, the whole family lives only with nature.

- Thank you artist Ly Hai for sharing!
