The feat of shaping

Mr. Tran Hoai Nam, Head of Design Team of Chu Dau Ceramics Joint Stock Company, designed the snake mascot.

In order to have enough orders to deliver to customers on schedule, in December 2024, the production workshop of Chu Dau Ceramics Joint Stock Company was very busy.

The artisans here divide the work into many stages, very elaborate, dedicated, urgent. Mr. Tran Hoai Nam, Head of the Design Team of Chu Dau Ceramics Joint Stock Company, said that from the idea of the company's leadership, within 1 week, he finished designing the image of the snake mascot.

After many revisions and approvals of the official model, the image was sent to Mr. Nguyen Nang Thon, a Vietnamese craft village artisan (awarded by the Vietnam Craft Village Association), the company's production team to create the animal shape. Mr. Thon said this is the most difficult and important step, requiring imagination and high skills to successfully express. In nearly 20 years of working in the profession, the snake is the mascot that Mr. Thon finds the most difficult to create. The shaping step must express the idea of aspiration, striving to develop and steadfastly embracing fortune.

“This is a very important step, requiring experience and high techniques, because from this product, the molding process will continue to produce a series of other snake mascot products. Every small detail must be molded, carved and trimmed completely by hand, creating a unique and soulful mark for Chu Dau ceramic products,” said Mr. Thon.

To complete the product, the animal must go through many steps such as baking to test the elasticity. It takes Mr. Thon about 1 month to complete each of these snake mascot models. After the animal model is approved, the product is molded. This stage also takes a lot of time because many times after opening the mold, the animal loses some details, at this time he has to make adjustments until the mold is smooth.

From this mold, a series of products with the image of a different snake mascot will be produced. Each product will be transferred to the rough finishing department. This stage requires the craftsman to be skillful in editing the excess parts after the mold is finished.

The finishing stage requires a very high level of skill from the craftsman to be able to exude the majesty of the king cobra.

The product continues to be shaped and trimmed in detail. The finished rough product has a friendly, cheerful look; the creator only needs a small movement to make the corners of the snake mascot's mouth smile; the stylized, gentle details still exude the power of the king cobra.

The finished raw product will be washed with water, smoothed, then painted or glazed and fired.

In addition to traditional enamel products, high-end gift products require one more step: gold painting. Artisans will use 24k gold painting solution to decorate the product, then bake it to complete the final product.

According to the plan, Chu Dau Ceramic Joint Stock Company will produce 2,025 snake mascot products to serve customer ordering needs and the gift market.

In Vietnamese folk culture, snake worship is a primitive belief with two meanings: worshiping water gods and totems. The practice of considering snakes as water gods is associated with the notions of rivers and water of agricultural residents, which are common in many regions. Therefore, snakes are not only ordinary animals but also symbols with spiritual meanings.
