According to the recently announced mid-term population and housing census report for 2024 by the General Statistics Office, divorce is uncommon in Vietnam and accounts for a low proportion, but has increased compared to 2019. In 2024, the proportion of widows and divorcees nationwide increased by about 1.3 percentage points, equivalent to an increase of about 1.3 million people.
According to statistics, the divorce rate differs by gender, the "divorce" status of women is always found to be higher than that of men for all observed age groups. Regarding "separation", this status has the lowest rate, not common in Vietnam.
Nationwide, the proportion of widowed and divorced population accounts for 9.3% of the population aged 15 and over, of which the widowed population accounts for 6.7%; the divorced population accounts for 2.6%.
Comparing urban and rural areas, the proportion of people aged 15 and over living in the marital status of "single" (never married; widowed; divorced; separated) in urban areas is higher than in rural areas, at 37.8% and 32.7%, respectively.
According to statistics, men have the highest divorce rate in the 40-44 age group with 4.2% and women 40-49 years old account for 4.6%.
In fact, women tend to marry earlier than men, but as they get older (over 45), their ability to marry/remarry becomes more limited than that of men. Under the age of 45, the proportion of women who have never been married is always lower than that of men, which means the proportion of women who have been married is higher than that of men.
For example, in the 20-24 age group, the proportion of ever-married women is 2.5 times higher than the proportion of married men (31.0% compared to 12.6%). However, from the age of 45 onwards, marriage is more common among men, as shown by the higher proportion of married men and the much lower proportion of single (never married/divorced/separated) than among women.
In the 45-49 age group, the proportion of single men is only 8.4% while the proportion of single women is 9.6%.
According to statistics, the whole country has about 2,225,000 divorced/separated people, of which more than 963,000 are men and 1,262,000 are women.
The divorce/separation rate is highest in the Southeast region with nearly 560,000 people. The lowest is in the Central Highlands with nearly 115,000 people.
The province with the highest number of divorced/separated people is Ho Chi Minh City with 263,000 people. Hanoi is the second with 146,444 people. These are also the two most populous cities in the country.
Next are the provinces/cities with high divorce/separation rates such as: Binh Duong (91,000 people); Dong Nai (82,000 people); Tien Giang (65,000 people); Thanh Hoa (57,000 people); Tay Ninh (55,000 people); Hai Phong (52,000 people); Nghe An (45,000 people).
Bac Kan province has the lowest number of divorces/separations at 6,417 people. Cao Bang is next with more than 7,300 divorces/separations.
The divorce/separation rate also differs significantly between rural and urban areas. While rural areas have 1,263,000 divorces/separations (592,000 men and more than 671,000 women), urban areas have fewer divorces with 962,000 (371,000 men and 590,000 women).
