Opinions at the seminar shared the same view: Quang Nam traditional crafts are facing many challenges to survive and develop in the new context, so they need to be supported to keep the "fire of the profession".
Passionate about passing on the profession
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, among the 30 traditional craft villages recognized by the Provincial People's Committee, 16 craft villages are operating at a stable level, mainly concentrated in craft villages such as fine art carpentry, broom making, incense making, fish sauce processing, seafood processing... The remaining 14 craft villages are operating at a moderate level, not regularly maintained, and some craft villages are at high risk of disappearing.
Meritorious artisan Bui Van Thu (Phu Ninh district) shared that he was fortunate to be taught the craft by the late artisan Dinh Thach of Van Ha carpentry village, but nowadays there are fewer and fewer young workers dedicated to the craft, putting Van Ha carpentry village at risk of extinction.

Mr. Pham Viet Tich - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development said that no matter what the solution is, the human factor must be put first. People create the profession and only people can maintain and continue the traditional profession. Therefore, to preserve the profession, we must first support dedicated artisans and train them to pass on the profession to the next generation.
Ms. Phan Thi A Kim - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology said: "If the indigenous knowledge of artisans is not passed on to the next generation, many craft villages will certainly decline in the near future."
As a bright spot in the work of preserving and developing traditional crafts thanks to the connection with tourism activities, the handicraft workforce in Hoi An currently has 1 People's Artisan, 2 Meritorious Artisans, 7 provincial-level artisans and 13 provincial-level skilled workers, along with nearly 1,000 workers and craftsmen working in traditional crafts and craft villages.
Mr. Dinh Hung - Head of Hoi An Economic Department said that the human factor plays a key role in preserving the profession. In the context of many local service - tourism industries developing strongly and with high remuneration as present, vocational training and passing on of traditional professions must be given top priority.
Need to get involved synchronously
Many opinions at the seminar shared the same opinion that to create new vitality for craft villages, the synchronous participation of many parties is needed, the agricultural sector alone is not enough. Notably, the accompaniment and support of the Department of Industry and Trade, Department of Science and Technology, etc. are needed.

Mr. Nguyen Ut - Vice Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Quang Nam province said that it is necessary to continue implementing the planning for rural industry development with the basic principle of linking with the overall planning for socio-economic development, promoting the strengths of each region and protecting the environment.
Reorganize industry production towards forming value chains from raw material areas, production to product consumption. Develop and attract enterprises, cooperatives, and cooperative groups to participate in the value chain to provide services to production facilities, meet the requirements of traceability, effective quality management, and enhance product value.
The Department of Science and Technology said that recently the department has supported intellectual property protection for 26 craft villages, the remaining craft villages also need to soon have a solution to calculate and approach this issue and cannot leave it unsolved.
Ms. Phan Thi A Kim - Deputy Director of the Department of Science and Technology said that many traditional occupations are currently struggling to find raw materials and raw material areas for production, so it is necessary to assess the level of raw material supply, thereby proposing appropriate policies and mechanisms. At the same time, it is necessary to research technological innovation and protect the environment of craft villages to increase competitiveness.
Mr. Vo Nguyen Tung - Head of the Cua Khe Fish Sauce Craft Village (Binh Duong Commune, Thang Binh) said: "Only when fish sauce drops are sold, the craft village will survive, but if we want Cua Khe craft village to develop, we must associate it with tourism" and at the same time proposed that the authorities help the village complete and publish the story of Cua Khe craft village to combine it with the story of craft village tourism.
Besides, the location of Cua Khe village is quite convenient when it is close to major tourist areas but not convenient because from the main road Vo Chi Cong to the craft village is about a kilometer but the entrance is very winding, difficult, and needs to be considered for support.
Mr. Pham Viet Tich said that the valuable opinions at the seminar provided additional perspectives and foundations to support traditional occupations. The Department will absorb and synthesize to propose competent authorities to soon update and adjust the contents of Resolution No. 38 on mechanisms and policies to support the development of rural occupations and craft villages in Quang Nam province in the period of 2023 - 2025 in the coming time.
The total revenue of craft villages in 2022 is estimated to reach more than 150 billion VND. Workers participating in traditional craft production in the province are mainly the elderly, middle-aged, idle agricultural workers, seasonal workers and female workers. The majority are over 45 years old. Production in craft villages is mainly manual, accounting for more than 65%, on a small scale, with incomplete infrastructure investment.
