Mastering technology, replacing large foreign contractors
Dr. Phan Dang Phong, Director of the National Institute of Mechanical Engineering (NARIME), said that over the past time, NARIME has always linked scientific and technological research activities with key socio-economic programs of the country, actively participating in green energy and green transportation conversion activities and programs.

Typically, with the assessment that the automobile and motorbike market is a large market and if we can master the provision of systems and auxiliary equipment in this field, it will open up a new and sustainable development direction for the Institute. Starting from 2012, NARIME has chosen to start investing resources to build a team and facilities to research, design, manufacture and master the technology of car welding jigs according to the standards of major car manufacturers such as Honda, Toyota, Hyundai with the initial predecessor being a team of more than 20 staff and design engineers from the Institute's Heavy Engineering Center under the guidance and training of Japanese and Korean experts.
By 2024, after more than 12 years of construction and development in this field, NARIME has a team of over 50 engineers specializing in designing and manufacturing domestic automobile assembly lines and automobile welding fixtures, building a network of hundreds of domestic and international suppliers and partners, implementing projects with a total value of over 800 billion VND/year. The Institute has equipped many specialized copyrighted design software, creating the best conditions for the design team's operations.
Along with the efforts, always being active, proactive in learning, researching, studying advanced technologies, modern and diverse equipment, the design team, during the implementation process, the Institute always received the attention and support of the leaders of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Ministry of Science and Technology in supporting, enhancing the capacity of research, design, manufacturing, integrating equipment lines, and welding fixtures for automobiles. The Institute has consulted and selected optimal solutions, suitable for the requirements of many different customers.

Currently, NARIME is the main supplier of welding equipment and fixtures, replacing foreign contractors for major domestic automobile factories. One of NARIME's current customers is the Vietnamese automobile manufacturer VinFast.
NARIME has been designing, manufacturing, integrating, installing, and instructing the operation of equipment lines and welding fixtures for VinFast's electric car models. The first project NARIME implemented for VinFast was to provide a 10.5 m electric bus welding fixture line from 2019, followed by projects to provide equipment lines, welding fixtures, and inspection fixtures for VinFast's electric car models such as VFe34; VF8; VF9; VF5; VF6; VF7; VF3, which were previously only performed by large foreign contractors (such as Thailand; Germany...), and no domestic unit could undertake.
Promoting green energy transition, green transportation
According to Decision No. 876/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister "Approving the Action Program on green energy conversion, reducing carbon and methane emissions in the transport sector", in which the Ministry of Industry and Trade is assigned the task of "Presiding over the development of the industry of manufacturing vehicles and transport equipment using electricity and green energy; producing and supplying electricity and green energy to replace fossil fuels to meet domestic demand; expanding the blending and supply of biofuels; developing electric charging systems and green energy for vehicles", NARIME has been actively participating in the automobile manufacturing support industry and the chain of global green energy and green transport conversion activities.
NARIME is being selected by electric vehicle manufacturer VinFast as a supplier of equipment lines and welding fixtures for electric buses, a type of green public transport that major cities are planning to prioritize in the near future.
According to the roadmap in Decision 876/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister, from 2025, 100% of replacement and newly invested buses will use electricity and green energy. From 2030, the rate of vehicles using electricity and green energy will reach at least 50%. From 2025, the rate of electric buses in public passenger transport will increase to 45-50% in Hanoi, 25% in Ho Chi Minh City, 25-35% in Da Nang, 20% in Can Tho, 10-15% in Hai Phong.
According to the plan of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the bus conversion will be implemented from 2025 and end in 2030. During this period, the city will invest in nearly 3,000 electric buses, with the goal of gradually replacing existing diesel and CNG buses.

Along with the action program on green energy conversion, NARIME also carried out "Design, supply, installation and testing of buoy and anchor systems" with a capacity of 47.5MW for the Da Mi solar power plant project.
The project was put into stable installation at Da Mi Lake (Binh Thuan) with a floating solar panel system on the lake, synchronously connected to the buoy system and electrical equipment, controlled with a capacity of 47.5MW. The buoy system is anchored on the lake bed thanks to a specialized anchor cable system, ensuring adaptation to all weather conditions on the lake bed...
Following the success of the Da Mi Solar Power Plant project, NARIME has designed, supplied and installed anchoring systems and accessories for solar power plants on Tam Bo Lake and Gia Hoet Lake.
In addition, the Institute is also implementing on schedule the ministerial-level project "Research and propose tasks and solutions for developing the equipment manufacturing industry serving the renewable energy industry for coastal and island areas of Vietnam until 2030, with a vision to 2045".
“Researching and mastering a number of technologies in the field of automobiles and motorbikes and manufacturing and trading in fields such as new energy and renewable energy are among the goals set to be completed in the “Development Strategy of the Mechanical Research Institute for the period 2023-2030 with a vision to 2045” that the Institute has submitted to the Ministry of Industry and Trade” – Dr. Phan Dang Phong said.
The achievements that NARIME has achieved, together with the attention and support of leaders at all levels and sectors, will be a great driving force for NARIME to continue to consolidate, promote and expand resources, actively propose and implement scientific and technological research activities, participate in the global value chain more deeply and widely, contributing to promoting the green energy transition, green transportation faster and achieving the goal of net greenhouse gas emissions of "0" of our Government earlier than planned.
