Promoting dialogue for an Indian Ocean

At the recent ASEAN Future Forum 2024 in Hanoi, many officials, experts, and scholars said that upholding international law and enhancing dialogue in the spirit of win-win are core factors to ensure security in the Indo-Pacific region. At the same time, ASEAN plays a central role in this effort.

In a discussion on security, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi said that ASEAN needs to continue to play a leading role in promoting changes in the Indo-Pacific region and regional cooperation. What is needed now is to build a strong and powerful ASEAN Community and continue to maintain its central role in responding to challenges.

At the same time, ASEAN needs to be more united so that the Indo-Pacific region continues to maintain peace, cooperation, and development, in which dialogue and negotiation, and win-win outcomes are promoted.

Besides, Minister Retno Marsudi also emphasized the need to comply with international law and implement international law consistently.

As one of ASEAN's important partners, in his video message to the Forum, Dr. S. Jaishankar, Minister of External Affairs of India, stated that the ASEAN-India relationship has been nurtured into a comprehensive strategic partnership based on similar values ​​and views.

Dr. S. Jaishankar affirmed that ASEAN holds a central position in India's Look East policy and is an important pillar in New Delhi's overall policy towards the Indo-Pacific region. India supports a united ASEAN, ASEAN centrality and the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific region. At the same time, he believes that a united and strong ASEAN will play a constructive role in the new regional architecture emerging in the Indo-Pacific.

Emphasizing the resolve with ASEAN in maintaining regional peace, stability and prosperity, the Indian External Affairs Minister highlighted the role of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982 for activities in the seas and oceans.

Participating in the discussion session, Cambodian Foreign Minister Kung Phoak assessed that ASEAN has done very well in promoting stability and peace in the region, based on its commitment to comply with international law, the principles stated in the ASEAN Charter and many other documents.
