He said the German military and defense industry could now count on Berlin's commitment to meeting the North Atlantic Treaty Organization's (NATO) 2% target.
"That is urgent," the German leader stressed.
Chancellor Scholz spoke after former US President Donald Trump angered Washington's allies by suggesting the US might not defend NATO members who he said did not spend enough on defence.
While in office, Mr. Trump publicly criticized countries that did not meet NATO's target of spending 2% of their gross domestic product (GDP) on defense.
Rheinmetall, one of the world's largest producers of artillery and tank ammunition, began ramping up operations after the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in 2022. Kiev's demand for ammunition exacerbated shortages and left European manufacturers struggling to meet demand.
