Latest information on the case of 20 preschool children suspected of rat poison poisoning

According to information from the People's Committee of Tam Duong district, at around 8:00 a.m. on November 5, 2024, in the 25-36 month old kindergarten class, there were 20 children and 2 teachers in charge of the class. At around 8:30 a.m., the teacher discovered that some children were holding pink pills suspected to be biological rat poison. Because of concerns that the children might have used them, the teacher contacted the staff of the Commune Health Station and took a total of 20 children to the Provincial General Hospital for examination, monitoring and treatment.

Through examination, 2/20 children showed symptoms of abdominal pain and nausea, suspected of having eaten rat poison.

That same night, a team of doctors from Bach Mai Hospital, including 6 officers from the Poison Control Center, Hematology - Blood Transfusion Center, Pediatric Center, Institute of Mental Health, and Pharmacy Department, arrived in Lai Chau to support treatment and prevent possible bad developments.

By the morning of November 6, the health of the 20 children had stable survival indicators and continued to be monitored.

Regarding the incident, Mr. Vu Xuan Thinh - Vice Chairman of Tam Duong District People's Committee said that the District People's Committee directed the relevant agencies to clarify the cause of the person bringing rat poison into the school. From there, determine the responsibility of the collective, individuals and strictly handle according to regulations to serve as a deterrent.

After the incident, the Chairman of Lai Chau Provincial People's Committee also requested Tam Duong District People's Committee to preside over and coordinate with the Department of Health, Department of Education and Training, and relevant agencies to inspect and clarify the cause of the poisoning, determine the responsibility of relevant organizations and individuals and handle the case; support the families of the pediatric patients during the treatment process.

To prevent and combat poisoning in schools, especially caused by drugs, chemicals, microorganisms... The Chairman of Lai Chau Provincial People's Committee also requested the Department of Education and Training and the People's Committees of districts and cities to direct the Departments of Education and Training, schools, and educational institutions to strengthen measures to ensure safety for students, especially in the management and use of toxic substances.

 

On the morning of November 6, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy - Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs (LD,TB&XH), representative of the Lai Chau Provincial Children's Support Fund visited and presented gifts to 20 children suspected of rat poison poisoning who are being treated at the Provincial General Hospital.

Here, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy - Deputy Director of the Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs kindly asked about the health of the children, encouraged the families to overcome difficulties in taking care of their children during their treatment at the hospital. On behalf of the Lai Chau Provincial Children's Fund, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy presented 20 gifts (each worth 300,000 VND) to the children.
