Footballers are sometimes superstitious, often clinging to habits they believe will bring them good luck. Former Chelsea captain John Terry has confessed to a series of pre-match rituals, from sitting in the same seat in the car to listening to an Usher album on repeat.
Furthermore, England legend Gary Lineker even changed his shirt mid-game if he didn't score in the first half. But all of that seems to pale in comparison to Ederson's special case.
Man City's number one goalkeeper left fans "frozen" when revealing a somewhat strange habit. He only wore the same pair of underwear during his 8 years of playing and that pair of underwear is still used regularly until now.
Speaking to Shay Given on BBC 's Football Focus , Ederson revealed: "The only superstition I have is that I play every game in the same underwear. Eight years on, still the same underwear."
Given was stunned after hearing this: "Impossible. Surely it's completely destroyed?". After this statement from the former Irish goalkeeper, both of them burst out laughing.
If Ederson's words are true, then since August 12, 2017 (his debut for Man City against Brighton), the Brazilian goalkeeper has played 363 consecutive matches wearing the same underwear. "Just hearing it makes me shudder," wrote Metro .
Reactions online were equally humorous with comments like: "Maybe that's why he made the whole stadium stink", "His pants must have holes in them, just like his recent goalkeeping form", "Crime, needs to be investigated immediately", "I wouldn't dare go near him on match day".
Those "legendary" pants are likely to reappear for the 364th time in the Manchester derby of round 31 of the Premier League on April 6, when Man City travel to Old Trafford.
Ederson has less than 18 months left on his contract with Man City and talks over a new deal have not progressed. Many sources believe that he could move to the Saudi Pro League in the summer of 2025.
