According to a press release from the Swedish Government, the Defense Cooperation Agreement (DCA) between Sweden and the United States has taken effect since August 15.
Sweden has maintained a policy of military non-alignment for two centuries, but is now undergoing rapid change. It became NATO's newest member in March 2023.
In December 2023, Sweden, Finland, and Denmark signed bilateral DCAs with the United States. These agreements will enter into force after being ratified by each country's parliament.
Under the DCAs, the US has access to military infrastructure in these countries. According to Swedish Television, the Swedish Parliament approved the agreement with 266 votes in favor, 37 against and 46 abstentions, despite opposition from the Left and Green parties, who criticized the lack of provisions related to nuclear weapons.
Meanwhile, the Finnish Parliament ratified the DCA with the US in July and is expected to take effect on September 1. The Danish Parliament has yet to vote on the deal.
