On August 15, Phu Tho General Hospital informed that the hospital's doctors had just treated a female patient (16 years old, from Vinh Phuc province) who had both legs paralyzed after inhaling laughing gas.

According to doctors, this young girl was brought to Phu Tho General Hospital by her relatives for examination in the following conditions: numbness, reduced sensation in all four limbs; legs heavier than arms, flaccid paralysis of the legs with 2/5 muscle strength, difficulty in movement, unable to walk, had to move in a wheelchair and weak arms...

Through medical history, the patient said that he was previously healthy, but 2 weeks ago he used 15 laughing balloons in 3 days. After that, the patient experienced numbness in all four limbs, frequent cramps, decreased sensation in both limbs, legs felt heavier than arms, and progressive weakness in the limbs led to inability to move both legs.

After examination and necessary tests and scans, the doctors diagnosed this female patient with subacute peripheral nerve damage due to laughing gas abuse. Treatment was prescribed with neurotransmitter enhancing drugs and high doses of vitamin B12. After 10 days of treatment, the patient's clinical symptoms are improving, she can walk and move around, but she needs to follow the doctor's instructions to speed up the recovery time.

Doctor Le Thi Bich Thuy, Head of the Department of Neurology - Musculoskeletal, Phu Tho General Hospital, said that the abuse of inhaling laughing gas can easily lead to Nitrous Oxide (N2O) poisoning, causing subacute neurological degeneration due to vitamin B12 inactivation, thereby causing long-term and difficult-to-recover nerve damage.

“Using laughing gas can cause temporary excitement and happiness, but it has negative effects on the user’s health. Stimulants can cause abuse or dependence, serious neurological and cardiovascular problems, brain inhibition, and even death,” Dr. Thuy warned.
