Nearly 1,000 more Covid-19 cases on May 21

According to the Ministry of Health's announcement on the Covid-19 epidemic, today, May 21, the country recorded 979 new Covid-19 cases. Since the beginning of the epidemic, the country has recorded 11.6 million cases, ranking 13th out of 231 countries and territories. With a rate of 117,254 infections/million people, Vietnam ranks 120th out of 231 countries and territories.

Today, May 21, 979 new Covid-19 cases were recorded domestically.

Health departments reported that on May 20, 148 patients were declared cured. Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 10.635 million Covid-19 cases in Vietnam have been cured.

At treatment facilities, 44 patients are breathing oxygen. Of these, 40 cases are breathing oxygen through masks; 1 case is breathing high-flow oxygen HFNC; 1 case is breathing non-invasively; 2 cases are breathing invasively.

On May 20, 1 death from Covid-19 was recorded in Tay Ninh. The total number of deaths from Covid-19 in Vietnam since the beginning of the epidemic is 43,203, accounting for 0.4% of the total number of infections.

Total deaths ranked 26th/231 countries and territories. Number of deaths/million people ranked 141st/231 countries and territories.

Regarding the progress of Covid-19 vaccination, the Ministry of Health said that on May 20, 168 more doses were injected. Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, more than 266.348 million doses have been injected to people nationwide.

According to the 2023 Covid-19 vaccination plan issued by the Ministry of Health, effective from May 19, the demand for booster shots this year in provinces and cities is nearly 3.94 million doses. Localities currently have nearly 340,000 doses left, needing an additional nearly 2.26 million doses.

In particular, priority is given to booster shots (including the 5th shot for those who have had 4 previous shots) for high-risk groups such as: the elderly, people with underlying diseases, people with immunodeficiency, pregnant women and frontline medical staff.

Currently, there is no recommendation for annual booster shots with the Covid-19 vaccine.
