VnExpressVnExpress08/04/2024

Three military officers are about to take up duty at the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in Central Africa, South Sudan and the Abyei region, according to the decision of the President.

On April 8, the Ministry of National Defense held a ceremony to present the President's decision to three officers. Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Sy Hieu will assume the position of Military Observer, MINUSCA Mission (Central African Republic); Major Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan will serve as Logistics Staff Officer, UNISFA Mission (Abyei region); Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Tien Long will serve as Military Observer, UNMISS Mission (Republic of South Sudan).

According to the Department of Peacekeeping, the three officers have completed the Competency Assessment Exercise for Peacekeeping Forces (CEPPP 2023) and the Bilateral Exercise with India on Peacekeeping (VINBAX 2023). They also underwent pre-deployment training courses to ensure they meet the mission requirements upon arrival.

Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense, hopes that the three officers will demonstrate their bravery and professional capacity, ensuring security and safety of people, weapons and equipment. The Department of Peacekeeping Operations needs to improve foreign language skills and continue to research candidates for work at the United Nations Headquarters and command positions at missions.

To date, Vietnam has sent 799 officers and staff to participate in peacekeeping activities at three missions and the United Nations headquarters.

The MINUSCA mission in the Central African Republic was established in April 2014 with the mission of protecting civilians and supporting the transition of power in Central Africa in the context of many active armed groups.

The UNMISS Mission in the Republic of South Sudan is the largest UN peacekeeping mission with nearly 18,000 personnel. South Sudan is struggling with violence, natural disasters, economic instability, and political and military conflict.

Abyei has an area of 10,546 km2, is a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan after the civil war in 2005. The UNISFA mission was established here to maintain, ensure security, safety and prevent conflicts and disputes between the two countries.
