What will Vietnamese sports do after the 2024 Olympics?
Báo Thanh niên•06/08/2024
There are two more athletes, Trinh Van Vinh and Nguyen Thi Huong, who have not yet competed at the 2024 Olympics, but up to this point, Vietnamese sports have learned many valuable lessons when winning medals or striving to surpass oneself is not easy.
Invest more deeply in shooting
The reality at the Olympics shows that shooting is the only sport in which Vietnam can get closest to a medal. This is also the sport in which Vietnamese shooters are not inferior to any other athletes from other countries. The difference, if any, is only a split second in terms of competitive mentality or courage at decisive moments. In the two women's pistol events, Trinh Thu Vinh played very well in the qualifying round and almost won a medal in the 10m air pistol event if she had been a little more accurate in the final.
Trinh Thu Vinh entered the finals twice
Head of the Vietnamese sports delegation Dang Ha Viet affirmed that shooting will still be a key sport, receiving more investment priority after the Olympics. In his role as Director of the Department of Sports and Physical Training, right at the Paris Olympics, Mr. Viet had a meeting with the World Shooting Federation in France, and asked the other side to support experts, equipment, ammunition, training locations, etc. In another meeting with the President and General Secretary of the Korean Shooting Federation, Vietnam also asked for help with regular, long-term training sessions so that Vietnamese athletes can best prepare for the next 4 years at the Los Angeles Olympics (USA). In addition to pistols, content related to women's air rifles is also focused on even though Le Thi Mong Tuyen's performance at the 2024 Olympics was not good and she could not pass the qualifying round. Women's air rifle is still a sport in which Vietnam has potential, but it needs more separate experts. In the immediate future, we aim to win a medal at the Nagoya ASIAD (Japan) in 2026 and must approach a medal at the 2028 Olympics.
Anh Nguyet attends the Olympics for the second time
Mr. Hoang Quoc Vinh, Head of High Performance Sports Department 1, Department of Sports and Physical Training, said that the sports sector will work with localities to find new human resources for shooting. The competition system for all age groups must also be rebuilt to be more diverse, to discover more talents. In addition, the sports sector will make recommendations to a number of relevant ministries and branches to adjust the treatment regime for athletes. Regarding archery, the fact that archer Do Thi Anh Nguyet only narrowly lost to her Iranian opponent with a "golden arrow" in the knockout round at the 2024 Olympics shows the commendable progress of the 23-year-old girl in her second time participating in the Olympics. Anh Nguyet's teacher, Korean expert Park Chae-soon, will continue to be trusted to train more Vietnamese archers with the ability to compete in the international arena. The absolute success of Korean archers when winning gold medals in all 5 events at the Olympics will further encourage Vietnam to continue maintaining relations with Korean archery through this expert. Vietnamese archery can aim for a medal in the 2026 ASIAD, creating momentum for the 2028 Olympics.
Recalculate investment strategy
The failure of Vietnamese athletes in athletics, swimming, rowing, badminton, boxing and cycling once again proves that the level gap is still very large compared to the world. That requires the sports industry to reform many things and recalculate its development strategy. There must definitely be changes in training plans, training, and finances to aim for the 2028 Olympics.

The sports industry will also have to be more determined to find the cause and solution to help Vietnamese athletes not only overcome themselves but also win more in the international arena. The case of swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang is a typical example. In-depth analysis is needed to clarify why Hoang could not reach his peak performance. In both events at the Olympics this time, Hoang could not surpass his own achievements. Vietnamese sports must develop a comprehensive plan to improve the level of basic sports for the 2028 Olympic campaign.
Trinh Van Vinh and the faint hope
At 8:00 p.m. on August 7, Trinh Van Vinh will compete in the finals of the 61 kg weightlifting event. He will have to compete with very strong opponents such as Li Fabin (China), Morris Hampton Miller (USA), Sergio Massidda (Italy), Eko Yuli (Indonesia), Ceniza John Febuar (Philippines)...
Trinh Van Vinh
Understanding the strength of his opponents, Vinh said that after training in China and recovering from back and knee injuries, he will do his best at the Paris Olympics. The specific goal that this 29-year-old athlete set is to surpass his best performance (294 kg). According to Vinh's calculations, to be able to enter the medal competition group in this weight class, the athlete must successfully conquer the 300 kg milestone.
