Every October to March of the following year, the sky of Kunming becomes more bustling than ever with the appearance of flocks of seagulls. In particular, Dianchi Lake - the largest freshwater lake in Yunnan province - is an ideal gathering place for these pure white birds. Here, visitors can watch flocks of seagulls spread their wings and fly, perch on the water surface and are even so friendly that they are willing to perch on hands when fed. We were lucky to visit the city in early spring. Walking along the banks of Dianchi Lake, looking up you can see the high blue sky, looking down you can see the lake surface as clear as a mirror, you can see a corner of Kunming city reflected on the lake surface as beautiful as a giant ink painting.

One of the most interesting experiences when coming to Kunming during the seagull season is to feed them yourself. Flocks of seagulls line up around the lake like strings of beads. The entire 4km long road is filled with white birds. This is perhaps the most wonderful thing that nature has bestowed upon Kunming to turn it into an ideal tourist destination, a small corner that everyone will remember. For the people of Kunming, the seagull season is not only a natural phenomenon but also a part of cultural life. Every year, the city government organizes events and small fairs around Dien Tri Lake to welcome this bird species. Many photographers also come here to capture the beautiful moments when the flock of birds soar in the blue sky.

Ms. Le Ha Phuong Thu, a tourist from Hanoi, shared: There are so many seagulls here that you just need to raise your hand and they will swoop down and fly around. The feeling of hundreds of birds flapping around you, gently taking food from your hand makes everyone excited. The most bustling and interesting thing is the tens of kilometers long lakeside road crowded with tourists playing with flocks of white seagulls. There are many shops selling bird food and bread for tourists to buy to treat the birds from far away. They swoop down to land on the hands of people eating bread and almost everyone wants to capture this borderless moment with these seagulls.

Locals say that every year, the most tourists come to Dien Tri Lake from around October, because this is the time when the most exciting festival of fishermen living on the lake takes place. Parks such as Dai Quan, Hai Giao or along the Bich Khe River are also great places to enjoy magical moments of nature. The chirping of birds mixed with the fresh air creates a rare sense of peace in the heart of the crowded city.
