Success with the model of growing melons in greenhouses

Thanks to boldly changing production thinking, converting crops, applying high technology to cultivation, bringing outstanding economic efficiency, Mr. Tran Thanh Tung, residing in Loi An hamlet, Binh Tan commune, Go Cong Tay district, Tien Giang province has become a good farmer and businessman at the provincial level with the model of growing melons in greenhouses. Binh Tan is the eastern end of Go Cong Tay district, which is affected by annual saline intrusion in the dry season, so farmers' cultivation often faces many risks and challenges. Realizing this, Mr. Tung researched and converted 1,000 m2 of rice land to grow fruit trees, however, the productivity and profit did not reach the desired level.

After that, Mr. Tung continued to research, regularly watched newspapers, radio, news, and learned which models were suitable for the soil conditions of the area that is often saline in the dry season; at the same time, he participated in a tour of effective greenhouse melon growing models organized by the District Agricultural Service Center.

From the visit, he realized that this was a model that was completely capable of developing in his homeland. Studying the consumer market, he realized the potential of this crop and with the enthusiastic guidance of the technical staff of the district's Agriculture Department, Mr. Tung boldly invested in building a greenhouse, installing an automatic irrigation system and applying a closed production process.

Mr. Tung said that the advantage of melons is a stable consumption market, delicious fruit, meeting quality standards of high sweetness, beautiful skin, bright color, the main customers are supermarkets and companies that always order his melon products at a stable price of 30,000 - 48,000 VND/kg.

According to Mr. Tung's calculation, he can grow 4-5 crops of melons a year, each crop takes an average of 2.5 months to harvest, on about 1,000 m2, he can harvest about 6-6.5 tons of melons each crop, with an average price of 30,000 VND/kg, he earns about 200 million VND.

Mr. Tung added that the model of growing melons in greenhouses is a completely suitable direction for farmers in the current climate change situation; at the same time, he also uses growth regulators during the pollination and development of melons, making the quality of melons delicious and sweet, safe for consumers' health.

In addition, Mr. Tung also shared more secrets and experiences in growing melons such as: Growing melons is not difficult, the difficulty is the investment capital, if you are persistent, tenacious, and hardworking, the melon growing model will bring the desired results.

In addition, it is necessary to pay attention to the selection of varieties and learn more about scientific and technical advances on the Internet. In addition, using the drip irrigation method also provides nutrients from fertilizers and water to the roots of the plants, meeting each stage of plant growth and not wasting irrigation water.

However, growing melons in greenhouses also has certain difficulties such as: Relatively large investment capital, developing a melon growing model requires growers to know how to apply science and technology to new production to produce a quality melon crop.

Mr. Tran Thanh Tung's melon growing model always follows a strictly controlled process from seed selection, plant pots, monitoring the growth process, nutrition, irrigation until the melons are harvested.

Not only enriching himself, Mr. Tung's melon growing model also contributes to creating jobs for 4 rural workers participating in daily work in greenhouses, with an income of 250,000 - 300,000 VND/day.

Engineer Mai Duc Tan, Director of the Go Cong Tay District Agricultural Service Center, said: The greenhouse system for growing melons has outstanding advantages, helping to block rain, sunlight, and prevent insects from entering. In particular, Mr. Tung always follows a good nutritional regimen and does not use pesticides, but only uses organic biological fertilizers, so he ensures safe and clean products, protects the health of both growers and consumers, and brings high economic efficiency, helping farmers change their agricultural mindset, strive to become rich legitimately, contributing to the development of the local socio-economy.

With the model of growing melons in greenhouses with high economic efficiency for many consecutive years, Mr. Tran Thanh Tung has been recognized as a good farmer in production and business at the provincial level. It can be said that the model of growing melons in greenhouses, applying drip irrigation technology of farmer Tran Thanh Tung has opened up a new direction in agricultural production in Go Cong Tay district.

This is also an opportunity for farmers to gain experience and access advanced technology to create clean products that are safe for consumers' health, especially in the current climate change situation.
