This will be an important milestone marking the completion of the main bridge section, 4 months ahead of the Prime Minister's direction.
After nearly 25 months of construction, Rach Mieu 2 main bridge is ready for the closing ceremony; 13/14 main bridge deck blocks have been completed and the final 5m long closing block is under construction. The project has completely installed 112/112 cable-stayed bundles, creating a beautiful architectural image across the Tien River.
Rach Mieu 2 Bridge has a total length of more than 17.6 km, of which the main bridge is 1,971 m long and is designed in the style of a modern cable-stayed bridge with 2 cable planes, main span diagram 120m + 270m + 120m. The bridge has 4 lanes with a width of 21.5 m, design speed of 80 km/h, two towers 113.5 m high.
The project has a starting point at Dong Tam intersection (intersection between National Highway 1 and Provincial Road 870) in Chau Thanh district, Tien Giang province; the end point is at Km16+660 National Highway 60, in Ben Tre city, Ben Tre province, about 0.71 km from Ham Luong bridge.
The project has a total investment of VND 6,810.11 billion, starting from March 2022 for the approach road and March 2023 for the main cable-stayed bridge. Up to now, the entire project has completed 85% of the volume, exceeding the overall progress by more than 5.04% compared to the plan. In particular, the main bridge is ahead of schedule by more than 15%.
According to the My Thuan Project Management Board, the near completion of the bridge is the result of the tireless efforts of the staff, engineers and workers at the construction site. The units have organized construction in '3 shifts, 4 teams', 'overcoming the sun and rain' with the determination to complete the project as soon as possible.
To achieve this impressive progress, the contractor mobilized 150 pieces of equipment, 500 workers, and 83 technical staff to deploy 30 construction teams working throughout the holidays. In particular, the My Thuan Project Management Board and participating units launched the emulation movement "45 days and nights to speed up construction progress" to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification Day (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).
The Rach Mieu 2 Bridge Project has received the attention and direct direction of the Prime Minister many times. During two visits and inspections of the project (February 15, 2023 and March 23, 2024), the Prime Minister directed to shorten the progress and strive for early completion to minimize traffic congestion on the already overloaded Rach Mieu Bridge.
According to the original plan, the project was to be completed in January 2026. However, with the current progress, the entire project is expected to be completed and put into operation in August 2025, about 6 months shorter than the contract.
Rach Mieu 2 Bridge is not only important in terms of transportation, but also contributes to promoting socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security of provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region in particular and the whole country in general. The bridge will share traffic volume with the existing Rach Mieu Bridge, meeting the increasing transportation demand on National Highway 60.
After the closing ceremony, My Thuan Project Management Board and related units will focus on completing the remaining items of the project. According to the plan, by June 30, 2025, the project will complete all 5/5 bridges on the route and basically complete the approach road, striving to put the project into operation in time for National Day, September 2, 2025.
