Many propaganda activities to spread the event "Earth Hour"

On Saturday evening (March 23), from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., the “Lights Off” activity will take place in response to the “Earth Hour 2025” event. This year, the Ministry of Industry and Trade launched this event with the message “Green Shift - Green Future” to spread the spirit of joining hands to save energy and protect the environment.

The event "Earth Hour" was initiated by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and in 2009, Vietnam responded for the first time with the participation of 6 provinces and cities, including: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Quang Nam, Hue City and Khanh Hoa. Up to now, after 16 years of organization, the event has created positive changes in the community regarding awareness, meaning and benefits of saving energy, protecting the environment and responding to climate change.

In Hue City, Hue Electricity Company (PC Hue) has implemented many activities to respond to the annual "Earth Hour" event. Not only with direct and specific response movements, PC Hue also integrates with the city's electricity saving program (E&S) according to Directive 20/CT-TTg of the Prime Minister on strengthening E&S in the period of 2023-2025 and the coming years. Through the above activities, PC Hue hopes to contribute to changing the awareness of the social community, considering the implementation of E&S solutions as a regular activity and becoming a daily habit of the people.

Responding to the "Earth Hour" event this year, PC Hue has proactively coordinated with departments, localities... to develop plans to reduce power in densely populated areas, public lighting systems, entertainment areas and have a plan to safely operate the power grid system before, during and after the event. Thereby, contributing to promoting propaganda in many forms, to spread the meaning of the event as well as raise awareness of energy saving in the long term for people, especially in the hot season, when the demand for electrical equipment increases.

Mr. Nguyen Hoa (Thuy Chau, Huong Thuy Town) said that not only does he "Turn off the lights" to respond to the "Earth Hour" event, but his family also always turns off unnecessary lights, takes advantage of natural light and wind by opening the balcony door, and minimizes the use of devices that consume a lot of electricity such as air conditioners, water heaters, hair dryers, etc. This year, his family will continue to respond to "Turn off the lights", taking advantage of this time to gather together...

Mr. Hoa's point of view, as well as many families and young people today, is not just thinking that turning off the lights for an hour will change the quality of the earth's environment immediately, but it will impact each person's psychology about environmental protection awareness. For them, turning off the lights is not only to respond to "Earth Hour", but also to always be aware of turning off lights and other electrical devices when not in use to contribute to energy saving and environmental protection.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dai Phuc, Director of PC Hue, to respond to the "Earth Hour" event, what we need to aim for now is not simply saving energy and protecting the environment for 1 hour, but building a conscious and responsible lifestyle throughout 365 days, so that every hour of the year is "Earth Hour". "Turning off the lights for 1 hour" is a simple symbolic action but serves to remind the community and individuals to pay attention to actions to adapt and create long-term habits in practicing saving energy.

According to calculations, thanks to responding to the "Earth Hour" event, the average annual electricity saving output is from 2,300 - 2,400 kWh, accounting for a significant proportion of the electricity used, with a saving value of up to hundreds of billions of VND. In Hue City, on the occasion of responding to the "Earth Hour" event in 2024, the whole city saved 18,100 kWh. Thereby, spreading the energy saving movement in the year is 61,104 million kWh, reaching 2.87% compared to the total commercial electricity output. Hopefully, through the event responding to "Earth Hour" in 2025, the energy saving level in the year and the coming time of Hue City will increase.
