Comrade Nguyen Thanh Lam, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, spoke at the Forum.
On September 19, in Da Nang, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Nguyen Thanh Lam chaired the ASEAN Regional Forum on responding to and handling false information in cyberspace.
Delegates from 8 ASEAN countries attended the Forum. |
Attending the Forum were representatives of electronic information management agencies of 8 ASEAN countries; representatives of press agencies of ASEAN countries; representatives of some cross-border platforms (Google, Tiktok) and representatives of the ASEAN Secretariat.
The Forum activities are part of the 16th ASEAN Ministers on Information (AMRI) and related senior officials meetings with the theme "Communication: From information to knowledge for a resilient and adaptive ASEAN".
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, since 2017, regarding the issue of misinformation and fake news, ASEAN has conducted many activities to raise awareness about dealing with the harmful effects of fake news, including programs and workshops to share management policies, campaigns to improve people's understanding of digital technology as well as promote experience sharing among electronic information management agencies.
At the 14th ASEAN Ministers on Information (ARMI) Meeting in 2018, the framework and joint statement on mitigating the harmful effects of fake news were adopted. Subsequently, at the 19th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Information (SOMRI-19) in Thailand in 2022, Vietnam proposed the establishment of an ASEAN response team on fake news to enhance cooperation, information sharing, and propose feasible solutions to prevent and combat fake news.
The initiative was then formally approved and the ASEAN Task Force on Fake News was established. However, its activities have mainly focused on sharing experiences among national regulatory agencies.
The organization of the ASEAN Regional Forum on Responding to and Handling Fake News in Cyberspace aims to create an open space for exchange between state management agencies, the press, cross-border platforms and relevant parties to affirm the determination of ASEAN countries to minimize the harmful effects of fake news, towards ASEAN's common efforts to create a healthy and trustworthy information space for the people.
