Increase income with dry straw

These days, farmers in the Dong Thap Muoi districts in the province are harvesting the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop. In addition to the combine harvesters that are busy harvesting rice , many straw balers are also operating at full capacity to collect straw and sell it to traders.

After the rice is cut, the straw is quickly rolled up neatly by the machine (from 18-20kg/roll). From there, the straw is loaded onto a tractor and transported to the collection point for consumption or to warehouses. The straw making job is not too hard but brings a stable source of income to many people: field owners, straw rolling machine owners, traders, workers, and straw transport vehicle owners.

Mr. Luu Quoc Hoang, one of the straw rolling machine owners in Tan Hung town, Tan Hung district, said: “In recent years, the demand for straw rolling for farming and livestock farming has increased, many traders from inside and outside the province have come to buy. I have a tractor at home, so I invested in a straw rolling machine to roll straw and sell it to traders during the off-season.”

A straw rolling machine can roll about 500-700 rolls per day. After deducting expenses, the machine owner earns about 2-3 million VND/day.

According to Mr. Hoang, with a machine, a person can roll 500-700 straw rolls/day. With the rental price of 5,000 VND/roll, after deducting expenses, he earns about 2-3 million VND/day.

Mr. Nguyen Van Hoang (Vinh Thuan commune, Vinh Hung district) receives orders to transport rolled straw from the field to the warehouse at a price of 6,000 VND/roll. With 2 tractors and 8 hired workers, his transport team can transport about 1,500 rolls of dry straw to the warehouse per day. After deducting the cost of paying workers 400,000-500,000 VND/person/day, he earns 3-4 million VND/day.

Straw harvesting helps hired workers earn an additional income of 400,000-500,000 VND/person/day.

Due to the increasing demand for straw, straw is in high demand during each rice harvest. As a result, farmers not only earn an additional income of about VND500,000/ha from selling straw but also reduce the cost of cleaning the fields. “With an area of ​​2ha, I sold 1 million VND worth of straw. I use this money to cover the cost of the upcoming crop, although it is not much, it helps a bit” - Mr. Nguyen Van Be (Vinh Thuan commune, Vinh Hung district) shared.

For traders, each crop can sell tens of thousands of rolls of straw, earning tens of millions of dong. Mr. Ngo Hoai Tam - a straw trader in Vinh Thuan commune, Vinh Hung district, said: "In recent years, the movement of raising livestock and growing crops, making straw mushrooms in some provinces has developed strongly, so the demand for straw is quite large. On average, each crop, I store about 40,000 rolls of straw to sell to livestock and growers in the provinces: Ben Tre, Tra Vinh, Dong Nai, Binh Thuan, ... Currently, the price of straw to buy is about 17,000 VND/roll, transporting to the provinces to sell fluctuates from 22,000-25,000 VND/roll, sometimes more than 30,000 VND/roll. Each crop like that, I earn tens of millions of dong".

The large demand for straw rolls helps farmers and traders earn millions after each harvest season, giving them more conditions to cover living expenses and invest in new production seasons. Not only that, the use of straw in farming and livestock farming helps reduce environmental pollution caused by farmers' habit of burning fields after the harvest season./.
