Large-cap stocks fell to their lowest levels, causing the index to fall even deeper.

More than 2 billion shares "changed hands"

In this afternoon's trading session, red no longer covered the stock market board, but turned to blue - the color that brings the most fear to investors holding stocks.

Statistical data on the whole market shows that 440 stocks have decreased by the full amplitude, something that has never happened before. VN-Index lost 88 points, the index fell deeply to 1,229 points, losing all the price gains since the beginning of the year.

This was also the sharpest decline in the region with active selling pressure and liquidity both increasing dramatically. At the end of the session, liquidity on all three exchanges reached more than VND44,000 billion with more than 2 billion shares "changing hands".

Not only domestic investors sold off, foreign investors also sold off with a net amount of nearly 2,700 billion VND.

The group that "drowned" the index the most was named VCB of Vietcombank, BID of BIDV , VIC of Vingroup, CTG of Vietinbank, VHM of Vinhomes, TCB of Techcombank, FPT, HPG of Hoa Phat, GAS, MBB of MBBank... Notably, all of these large-cap stocks hit the floor - a rare thing in market history.

The disastrous trading session of Vietnamese stocks took place after US President Donald Trump announced that he would impose a reciprocal tax of up to 46% on Vietnam.

US President Donald Trump's announcement of high tariffs on many countries, including Vietnam, is strongly affecting investor sentiment, causing the market to adjust sharply.

However, according to experts, this is a short-term psychological impact, the market will regulate to become more balanced again when the Vietnamese stock market is in a long-term growth trend with many positive expectations.

Stock market sentiment may gradually stabilize

Mr. Do Bao Ngoc - Deputy General Director of Kien Thiet Securities - said that the US's decision to impose new taxes this time is somewhat "tougher" than analysts expected.

Previously, experts predicted that the tax rate would fluctuate between 20 - 30% for some specific product lines, but in reality, many countries, including Vietnam, faced higher tax rates than expected.

"This reflects the Trump administration's trade policy towards stronger protectionism, aiming to reduce the US trade deficit and put pressure on countries with large surpluses with the US economy ," said Mr. Ngoc.

With a tax rate of 46%, Mr. Ngoc said this could cause great difficulties for export businesses, especially in industries such as textiles, footwear, wood, steel, and electronics - sectors with large export turnover to the US.

However, this could also be a move to put pressure on Vietnam to adjust its trade balance, while speeding up bilateral negotiations with the US to find the most suitable solution.

"It may just be short-term pressure due to widespread anxiety. If the Government takes appropriate response measures, the stock market sentiment may gradually stabilize," said Mr. Ngoc.

In addition, according to Mr. Ngoc, the US stock market may adjust, especially the stocks of multinational companies whose supply chains depend on countries subject to tariffs. In fact, on the afternoon of April 2, local time, the US stock market witnessed a general downward trend right after President Donald Trump announced the imposition of reciprocal rebate tariffs targeting dozens of trading partners.

A series of US stock codes fell after trading hours when President Trump announced to impose tariffs of at least 10% and even higher on some countries and territories, increasing the risk of a global trade war.

The Dow Jones index fell 256 points, equivalent to 0.61%; the S&P 500 fell 1.69%; the Nasdaq -100 index fell 2.54%./.
