Teachers "force" not work, turn to "threat"?
On April 25, sharing with reporters, Mr. D., a parent whose child is in class 9A4 at Kim Giang Secondary School (Thanh Xuan District, Hanoi), recounted: on April 22, he was one of 9 parents whose children were in this class who were invited to a private meeting by the teacher. At first, she advised that the children should only go to vocational secondary schools (before that, a representative of this secondary school had come to meet the parents and did marketing work, distributing flyers about the school's enrollment...). "She said that the children should not take the exam. However, we, the parents, did not agree and still chose the option that we thought was suitable for our children's academic ability. We still decided to submit an application to take the entrance exam to grade 10 at a public high school for our children," Mr. D. reflected.
The recording of the meeting between the homeroom teacher and the parents of class 9A4 shows that the parents reacted strongly to the teacher's advice. A female parent told the teacher: "After 9 years of studying, let your child take the exam so that he can test himself against his friends in the whole city. If I go home now and tell my child not to take the exam anymore, you will let him pass the junior high school graduation exam, he will be more humiliated than taking the exam and getting a bad score." According to this parent, the family does not have the means to pay millions of dong per month in tuition for their child to study privately, so they chose a school in the suburbs, determined that he would have to study far away.
When seeing that the parents were still determined to protect their children's right to take the exam, the homeroom teacher said that from now on, they would enter the scores into the book and would not "support" them... Parents understood that if they let their children take the exam, they would even "repeat" 9th grade, not meet the requirements to graduate from junior high school and thus would not be able to get into any school, including private schools or junior colleges that accept admission based on academic records.
In particular, this parent shared that after her "threat", the parents in the group said that the electronic grade book software (EnetViet) that parents have to pay monthly to monitor their children's daily learning results, suddenly all of their children's grade 9 academic data was "blank". "That was the abnormality that made me feel that my child was in danger", said Mr. D.
Parents worry about their children being psychologically abused
Mr. D. said that his daughter told him that for many days now, the teacher has been doing "ideological work" with the students, but in fact it is an act of "psychological manipulation" with the children; the students have to endure that pressure for a relatively long time. In front of the whole class, she specifically said that students A, B, C have poor academic performance, are not qualified to take the exam, and if they take the exam, they will not pass, and "if they take the exam, if someone asks about their score, it will be very embarrassing"...
Mr. D. frankly said: "We decided to speak up with the first wish of regaining justice for our children. They have the right to study and the right to take exams. We often teach our children not to be discouraged by difficulties, and to cling to even a small glimmer of hope. So why do teachers and the educational environment make students afraid, give up hope and try?"
A parent shared that after her son heard his teacher talk every day in class about not taking the exam, and when she met with parents privately to "force" him not to register for the exam, he stopped eating.
Another parent also said: "The way the counselor threatened us with the words 'if you still insist on taking the exam, your real study results will be returned and the door to private schools will be closed to you', we felt very confused and upset."
A parent named N. said: "My daughter comes home crying all the time, her mentality is very unstable, her academic performance has declined significantly compared to last year (in 8th grade she was an excellent student). I just hope that no matter what the result is, my children will be able to take the exam, test themselves and know where they are so they can try harder when they go to high school, not leaving any psychological "marks" in them."
The principal said he only asked the teacher for "advice".
On April 25, speaking to reporters, Ms. Pham Xuan Oanh, Principal of Kim Giang Secondary School, affirmed: "We absolutely never support teachers forcing students and parents not to let their children take the exam. The school directs teachers to advise all students, they need to register their wishes in accordance with their academic ability to register for the exam appropriately, avoiding lower or higher than their academic ability. The teachers' task is only to advise, while the decision-making power belongs to the students and their parents."
The Ministry of Education and Training promised to "handle it seriously"
Remember, at the same time last year, public opinion was also "in turmoil" when some parents with children studying in Cau Giay District (Hanoi) reported that students with "poor" academic performance were forced to commit not to take the 10th grade entrance exam or had to transfer their children to another school. Immediately, the leaders of the Ministry of Education and Training directed the Hanoi Department of Education and Training to verify, clarify and strictly handle if there was any. In this announcement, the Ministry of Education and Training also publicly announced the hotline number and email calling on people to speak up and promised to strictly handle any phenomenon of forcing students with poor academic performance not to take the 10th grade entrance exam.
After a while, a representative of the Ministry of Education and Training cited a local report saying that there was "no" ban on students taking the 10th grade entrance exam as reported by public opinion. The Ministry of Education and Training also did not announce the results of receiving feedback from people about this situation through the hotline number and email.
A teacher in Hanoi shared: "Last year, when the Ministry of Education and Training intervened very early and promised to rectify the situation, we were very hopeful, but the result was a very disappointing silence from the Ministry. We need to be more determined in fighting against the disease of achievement, putting pressure on teachers and schools about exam results and passing."
The situation of forcing students to not take the 10th grade entrance exam is a scandal almost every year, making parents in Hanoi angry. Every year, the authorities promise to "investigate, strictly handle, and rectify"... but then it happens again every year.
Regarding a group of parents of class 9A4 reflecting on the way the homeroom teacher did things, Ms. Oanh said she had not met the parents, but it was possible that the way a teacher spoke had caused the parents to misunderstand, because not everyone was "subtle and tactful" enough. "I had an initial discussion with the teacher, and the teacher said there was no coercion, only advice," Ms. Oanh said, and promised to meet directly with parents who "were not satisfied with her advice" to ease the psychological concerns of the parents and their children.
Ms. Oanh also affirmed that the school is not under pressure to stream students after junior high school or to set competition criteria based on the results of the 10th grade exam and only considers this "one of the school's professional activities". "Any teacher who does not do the right thing will be disciplined depending on the level of violation, and at the same time, we will correct and improve counseling skills to prevent this situation from recurring", Ms. Oanh said.
Regarding the "blank" report card after the teacher's "threat" that parents reported, Thanh Nien reporter asked about the school's electronic report card management process, whether teachers have the right to display the score or make it "disappear", Ms. Oanh said that a vice principal of the school has been assigned to manage the electronic report card and would like to answer this question later.
However, right after the press worked with the principal, in the early afternoon of April 25, parents reported that all of the 9th grade students' scores were displayed on the electronic grade book with scores sufficient to consider graduating from junior high school.
