Serious accident because of beauty
The increasing demand for beauty has fueled the strong growth of the cosmetic industry in Vietnam. However, this has also led to an alarming increase in cosmetic complications, from infections, tissue necrosis, to more serious complications.
During the Lunar New Year, the Department of Maxillofacial, Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery (Viet Duc Friendship Hospital) received a series of serious complications due to filler injections at home or at unlicensed facilities. Among them, a 14-year-old female student almost lost her left eye sight due to filler injections for nose augmentation.
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Hong Ha, Head of the Department of Maxillofacial, Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, this female student injected filler into her nose at home after seeing an advertisement on social media without knowledge of safe medical procedures. Improper injection led to cerebral artery occlusion and central retinal vein occlusion, causing serious vision loss.
Recently, the 108 Military Central Hospital admitted a 44-year-old female patient to the emergency room after receiving an anesthetic injection for a nose filler injection at an underground cosmetic facility. The patient was diagnosed with a grade III anaphylaxis to lidocaine and was treated simultaneously according to both anaphylaxis and anesthetic poisoning protocols, using vasopressor adrenaline and 20% lipid emulsion along with other emergency resuscitation measures. Doctor Nguyen Tien Son (Emergency Department, 108 Military Central Hospital) said that in the above case, the patient was fortunate to receive proper, timely and active emergency care, thus avoiding unfortunate consequences.
According to statistics from the Tam Anh General Hospital system, since the beginning of 2025, the hospital has received nearly 100 cases of complications due to self-made beauty treatments at home, an increase of 25% compared to the last months of 2024. Doctors recommend that instead of rushing to beautify according to online advertisements, people should go to reputable medical facilities for consultation and cosmetic surgery, ensuring effectiveness and safety.
Strengthen inspection and handling of violations
One of the main reasons for the constant increase in cosmetic accidents is the explosion of substandard cosmetic facilities. Statistics from the Ministry of Health show that thousands of cosmetic facilities currently do not have full operating licenses and do not comply with cosmetic safety regulations. The lack of modern medical equipment and unqualified medical staff at these facilities have led to many unfortunate incidents.
According to experts, complications often occur in facilities without specialized doctors or adequate medical equipment, and consumers also lack knowledge about safe cosmetic methods. Choosing a beauty method based on price instead of reputation and quality is a dangerous factor. In addition, the psychology of wanting cheap things and lack of knowledge about aesthetics also makes it easy for many consumers to choose unlicensed facilities or unsafe services. In particular, methods such as liposuction, cosmetic surgery or filler and botox injections that are not performed properly can easily cause dangerous complications.
A representative of the Department of Medical Examination and Treatment Management (Ministry of Health) said that many cosmetic facilities do not meet the requirements of expertise and equipment, but still operate. This not only affects people's health, but also damages the reputation of the cosmetic industry in general. The Department has also inspected and handled a series of cosmetic facilities that violated the law, but this situation has not been completely resolved.
Medical experts warn that not only invasive cosmetic procedures, but also non-invasive services such as filler and botox injections pose risks if not performed properly. According to Dr. Hoang Hong, Head of the Department of Plastic Surgery (Hanoi Medical University Hospital), injecting fillers or botox into the body if not performed according to the correct procedure and without checking the health status of the person receiving the procedure beforehand can lead to blood vessel blockage, tissue necrosis, and even death. This happens mainly at facilities that lack sufficient expertise.
One way to minimize cosmetic complications is for consumers to carefully research cosmetic services and facilities before making a decision, choosing a facility with a practice license, highly qualified doctors, modern equipment, and compliance with safety procedures.
Although there are regulations on cosmetic practice and standards on facilities of cosmetic establishments, in recent times, the supervision and inspection situation has been very loose. To limit the situation of cosmetic accidents, there needs to be strong involvement of state management agencies, especially the Ministry of Health and related agencies. Cosmetic establishments that want to operate must be licensed and comply with regulations on safety and quality. At the same time, the authorities also need to regularly inspect, supervise, and strictly handle substandard establishments.
In addition, it is necessary to increase consumer education about the risks and how to identify reputable cosmetic facilities. People need to raise awareness and be cautious when choosing cosmetic services, avoiding following trends or attractive advertisements without full information.
