VnExpressVnExpress19/04/2024

Suri Cruise, 18, grew up protected by her mother from Scientology and the media, and has not seen her father since she was six.

Tom Cruise and his ex-wife Katie Holmes' daughter turns 18 on April 18. According to Page Six , Suri faces two choices when she comes of age. She can return to the media spotlight as she did when she was a child or continue the private life her mother has prepared for years to protect her from the Church of Scientology.

Suri Cruise was once the most famous baby in America. Suri's birth became a global sensation as the public wanted to see the combined faces of the A-list couple. After Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes divorced in June 2012, Suri Cruise lived with her mother in Manhattan (New York).

The news agency believes that the reason Tom Cruise is "cold" towards his daughter is related to the rules of the Scientology sect. According to the church's charter, members are prohibited from associating with non-believers. Suri and Katie Holmes are not believers, so the Top Gun star cannot maintain a relationship with the mother and daughter.

In 2016, multiple sources said Katie decided to divorce her husband because she feared losing Suri to Scientology. She witnessed Cruise's ex-wife - Nicole Kidman - being estranged from her two adopted children, Isabella and Connor, after both attended the church of this sect.

According to Daily Mail , Katie Holmes has been protecting Suri all this time, being a devoted mother to her child. When the couple divorced, they both agreed not to send their child to boarding school to dispel rumors that Suri was studying at a facility run by a cult. Katie tried to let her child enjoy a normal school life even though her parents were famous.

Suri is currently focused on her upcoming college years, planning to pursue a career in fashion. Suri has applied to many schools around the world while Katie wants her to study in New York so that mother and daughter can be close together.

Previously, the star always tried to make sure her daughter stayed away from the spotlight, but when Suri turned 16, she began to reveal some information about her daughter's life. Suri has made small steps in the entertainment industry. She sang the song Blue Moon in the TV project Alone Together (2021) and the soundtrack of Rare Objects (2023). Both works were written and directed by Katie Holmes.

In an interview with Yahoo in 2022, Katie praised Suri's singing ability: "When I work, I always demand the highest level of skill. So I asked my daughter and she is very good at singing. Suri agreed and recorded it, I let her do her own thing."

In an interview with InStyle in 2020, Katie Holmes said that Suri has passed her "little girl" stage and is more mature on the path of self-discovery and dedication to her passion. "She's the type of girl who, once she decides to pursue something, will work hard to master it, and then say, 'Okay, I'll try something else,'" Katie added. The actress also commented that Suri is strong, independent and very hard-working.

In June 2012, Katie Holmes suddenly filed for divorce with the help of her father, lawyer Martin Holmes. At that time, Tom Cruise was on the set of Oblivion (2013) in Iceland, surprised by his wife's move. According to the agreement, Tom Cruise provided $400,000 a year until Suri Cruise turned 18. The amount included medical, dental, insurance, education, college and other extracurricular expenses.
