The invisible houses have exterior paint that blends into the surrounding mountain landscape. From a distance, it is difficult to tell which is the house and which is the forest and trees.
In mid-May, on his way back to his hometown, Mr. Nguyen Van Linh (Dong Van, Ha Giang) discovered that many houses along National Highway 4C, the section connecting Meo Vac district to Dong Van district, were painted with large walls depicting trees and mountains.
The image of an "invisible" house in the middle of the Ha Giang mountains and forests has caused a "fever" in the community in recent days. |
From a distance, these houses give the feeling of being "invisible". From the color to the scenery, every detail matches the majestic nature surrounding them. "When I drove my motorbike past here, I felt extremely surprised and excited," said Mr. Linh.
Images of these houses were shared on travel groups, immediately attracting the attention of the community. Many people questioned whether this was a product of photoshop because the visual effect was so "virtual" that it was hard to believe.
The houses are decorated with eye-catching murals as part of a project to preserve traditional indigenous cultural architecture and develop tourism potential, attracting visitors to Ha Giang by local leaders.
This project started on May 5th, and has now completed the first 4 houses, located along National Highway 4C, in the communes of Pa Vi and Pai Lung, Meo Vac district.
The selected houses mostly have beautiful and majestic mountain views, but are located in hidden corners, are blocked or have a shabby appearance.
The main idea was to create a space that "blends with nature". The team of artists was tasked with making the houses invisible, "lying still" in the mountains behind.
Therefore, the meticulousness and perfection of the paintings must be guaranteed to the maximum. The painters have conducted research on the terrain and landscape surrounding the houses. How the painting on the wall looks from afar to match the mountain peak is something that takes the painters a lot of time.
The paintings recreate the countryside scenery with familiar images such as yin-yang tiles, stone fences, sa moc trees, corn fields, etc.
According to artist Duong Ba Hung, an artist participating in the project: "We will be beautify this road step by step. There will be a few houses completed first, then refer to objective assessments from the community and tourists, then absorb and make further improvements."
Mr. Hung also added that the construction process was quite difficult because the houses here had the road in front and the abyss behind. The crew could not set up scaffolding but had to use sticks or ropes to paint.

Each project is completed in about 2-3 days. Some houses that are under construction and cannot be completed will be supported by the local authorities to be renovated and then have murals painted for free.
The unique and colorful murals not only contribute to beautifying the landscape and residential architecture of Meo Vac people, but also help visitors better understand their homeland and the lifestyle of the highland people.
The change initially received many positive responses. Mr. Pham Van Hau, a tour guide in Ha Giang, said that recently when leading tourists through this route, many Western and Vietnamese tourists were amazed and delighted with the new look of the houses.
"Most visitors ask to stop and take pictures, while in the past tourists did not pay much attention to this route," said Mr. Hau.
On the morning of May 8, at a press conference organized by the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department, the Department of Information and Communications, and the Nghe An Provincial Journalists Association, Ms. Tran Thi My Hanh, Director of the Department of Culture and Sports, said that the 2023 Sen Village Festival on the occasion of the 133rd birthday of President Ho Chi Minh on May 19 (1890 - 2023) will take place from May 10 to 19 with many meaningful activities.
