On November 20, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) launched a major attack on Russian territory using British Storm Shadow long-range cruise missiles after receiving permission from the West.
According to information from the Russian side, the Kursk region was attacked. The attack was carried out on the village of Maryino. At least 12 missiles were fired at this location. Videos at the scene show many missile fragments with Western manufacturing marks.
Bloomberg quoted a Western official as confirming that the AFU had for the first time attacked Russian territory with Storm Shadow missiles. The attack was said to have been carried out “on military targets on Russian territory.”

According to Telegram channels monitoring the war in Ukraine, the AFU missile attack targeted the Baryatinsky area in the Kursk region, where the Maryino sanatorium is located.
Locals reported hearing loud explosions, followed by plumes of black smoke rising into the sky. Many images of buildings destroyed and on fire after being hit by missiles were recorded by Russian people.
US allows use of Storm Shadow missiles to strike deep into Russia
Regarding the attack, sources in Washington said that US President Joe Biden has authorized an attack deep into Russian territory using the Storm Shadow long-range missile. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer refused to make an official statement on the use of this cruise missile against Russian territory.
The US publication TWZ also pointed out the types of weapons AFU used to attack Russia's Kursk region, including many Western weapons. Specifically, Ukraine used US JDAM-ER and SDB glide bombs, as well as French AASM-250 Hammer. At the same time, according to the publication, the French SCALP-EG cruise missiles are currently used only against "Russian targets in Ukraine".
Will Russia respond?
Russian State Duma Deputy Speaker Alexei Chepa has issued a statement on Washington’s decision to allow Kiev to use British long-range missiles to strike deep into Russian territory, saying that this could lead to new escalations and also complicate future peace negotiations.
“The use of Storm Shadows missiles, which can be launched from US F-16 fighter jets, is a further escalation of tensions in the conflict,” Alexey Chepa said.
24 hour counterattack?
According to pro-Moscow sources, Russia may retaliate immediately on November 21, when the first reports of new ballistic missiles being prepared for attack are reported, the Military Summary channel said. Everything is ready, just waiting for the order to fire immediately.
As for the situation on the battlefield, the AFU’s attacks on Russian territory do not seem to affect the progress of Russian troops on the ground. In Toretsk, Russian troops are advancing into the city center and the Sabalka district. In Sabalka, the AFU is in danger of being surrounded by Russian assault groups.
North of Kurakhove, Russian troops are in control of most of the village of Sontsivka, located north of Stari Terny, as well as the village of Berestky.
South of Kurakhove and in the city center, the Russians continue to be successful, controlling about 35% of the city. The Russian army is also advancing along the fields to tighten the siege on Kurakhove. The Russians are accelerating very quickly in Kurakhove with fierce urban fighting. The AFU's corridor to retreat from this siege is less than 5km and is under Russian fire control. The 79th Ukrainian Brigade admits that Illanka - a village south of Uspenivka - has changed hands.
Rybar channel reported that Moscow is raiding the Impuls factory in Shostka, Sumy region.
In the Kursk direction, Russian troops destroyed another Abrams tank in the Sudzha district, and completed clearing positions in the Olhovskaya Grove area in the Korenevo district.
On the Pokrovsk side, Russian troops were fighting in the eastern suburb of Petrovka and advancing towards Pokrovsk along the railway line.
The Military Chronicles channel updated the latest developments showing that AFU may have retreated from the center of Kurakhove to the industrial zone in the west. If this information is confirmed in the coming days, the city could be easily controlled by the Russian side because AFU will not be able to hold on for long in an area only 1x2 km wide.
