Fox News reported on June 25 that Scooter, a Chinese Crested dog, won the world's ugliest dog contest this year held in Petaluma, California.
The 7-year-old dog with matted fur, deformed hind legs and a protruding tongue was considered the ugliest of the contestants.
The competition, held at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair, is designed to promote dog adoption and showcase the many dogs who have overcome adversity. In the case of the new champion, Scooter narrowly escaped being euthanized.
Scooter not only survived but also convinced the judges and was awarded a prize worth 1,500 USD (37.3 million VND).
"I am so happy and proud that Scooter won the World's Ugliest Dog contest. With the challenges he faced with his deformed hind legs, Scooter overcame them all and showed us the true meaning of resilience and determination," said Scooter's owner, Linda Elmquist.
Organizers of the contest said that soon after Scooter was born, his foster parents took him to an animal control facility in Tucson, Arizona, to be euthanized. But Scooter survived and is being helped by a mobility aid.
“This unique event allows us to celebrate the extraordinary beauty and resilience found in special dogs. Each contestant has a story to tell, and they are a testament to the power of love, compassion and indomitable spirit of these extraordinary animals,” said Tawny Tesconi, Executive Director of the Lower Sonoma-Marin Fair.
