Weak purchasing power
According to our observations, in recent days, goods in the Quang Nam market are abundant in variety and design. Essential goods such as food, beverages, fruits, seafood, cooking oil, etc. are abundant in supermarkets, traditional markets, mini supermarkets, and convenience stores. However, consumer purchasing power is weak.
Talking to us at Go Tam Ky supermarket on the morning of February 4, Ms. Trinh Thi Minh Ai (Tan Thanh ward, Tam Ky) said: "The goods we bought before Tet are still available. Sometimes we buy more drinks and bread to use immediately."
Tam Ky market is still quiet these days. Many small businesses have not opened yet, especially those selling clothes, fashion, and cosmetics. Stalls selling beef and pork at Tam Ky market have been open since the second day of Tet but few people buy.
Ms. Quynh Trang - a pork vendor at Tam Ky market said: "People stock up on pork and beef before Tet. We sell fresh meat to serve consumers who want to use new food products."
Most traditional markets in the province are quiet these days. The trend of online shopping is becoming more and more obvious, which is the reason why purchasing power at the market is gradually decreasing. A trader at Hoi An market said: Before Tet, goods sold more slowly than at the same time last year. After Tet, there is even more worry about unsold goods.
Keep the market stable
According to Ms. Do Thi Hien - Head of Trade Management Department (Department of Industry and Trade), from the second day of Tet, a number of distribution enterprises and individual businesses have begun to reopen to sell goods again with a fairly abundant supply, well meeting people's shopping needs.
Due to the low purchasing power of consumers in the province, prices of goods have decreased compared to the days before Tet. The market is relatively stable, there is no phenomenon of imbalance in supply and demand causing abnormal price increases.
Mr. Le Vu Thuong - Director of the Department of Industry and Trade said that thanks to the good implementation of the campaign "Vietnamese people prioritize using Vietnamese goods", Vietnamese goods dominate the market, especially food, clothing, and beverages that are trusted by people.
However, prices of many essential goods on the market are still fluctuating. The economy is still facing many difficulties and recovering slowly due to the impact of natural disasters and epidemics, which has negatively affected production, business and consumption, especially as people tighten their spending and purchasing power before, during and after Tet is not as strong as expected.
Through inspections and checks, food processing and trading establishments in districts in the province are still small, violating food safety and hygiene knowledge certification, improper food preservation, and unclear product price posting. The Department continues to inspect and handle to bring production and trading of goods into order.
According to Mr. Luong Viet Tinh - Director of the Quang Nam Market Management Department, before, during and after Tet, the functional sector closely coordinated with departments, branches and localities to inspect and monitor to prevent smuggled goods, counterfeit goods and fake goods. The force promptly detected, prevented and strictly handled acts of speculation, hoarding of goods, fraudulent methods of measurement and packaging to gain illegal profits.
“We continue to fight against the trade and transportation of banned and smuggled goods as well as the production and trading of counterfeit, poor quality and unknown origin goods to stabilize the market and protect consumers,” said Mr. Tinh.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade, in recent times, businesses participating in market stabilization, together with suppliers and distribution systems, have implemented many promotional programs, focusing on Tet products such as soft drinks, cakes, candies, jams, shoes, clothes, etc. Bringing Tet products to consumers has always been a focus of the functional sector and businesses; Tet sales points, Tet markets combined with programs to bring Vietnamese goods to rural areas, remote areas, island communes, and borders help people access and purchase essential goods.
