Merging provinces and cities, Ho Chi Minh City enrolls students at the primary level 2 months earlier

On March 29, information from the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training said that for the 2025-2026 school year, enrollment for preschool, grade 1, grade 6, and grade 10 in the city will be completed next June.

Every year, the enrollment for kindergarten, grade 1, and grade 6 is completed by Ho Chi Minh City in August. Thus, this year, the enrollment for the first level is pushed 2 months earlier than every year.

The entrance exam for grade 10 will take place on June 6-7. Candidates will take the Math and Literature exams in 120 minutes and the Foreign Language (mainly English) in 90 minutes. Students applying to specialized schools will take an additional specialized subject exam (150 minutes). Grade 12 students are expected to take the high school graduation exam on June 26-27 according to the 2024-2025 school year schedule announced by the Ministry of Education and Training.

Students in Ho Chi Minh City will finish the school year before May 31.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training, the earlier enrollment than every year is to suit the context of the whole country implementing the arrangement and merger of provinces and cities. In particular, the district-level tasks will be completed according to the conclusion of the Politburo and the Secretariat on implementing research and proposing to continue arranging the organization of the political system.

After the primary level enrollment steering committee and districts finish their roles, the Department of Education and Training will issue a document directing the establishment of a grassroots enrollment steering committee to continue implementing enrollment.

According to the decision of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on promulgating the schedule for the 2024-2025 school year, semester II starts from January 13, 2025 and lasts until the end of May.

Semester II must ensure 17 weeks of actual study, the rest is for other activities. All levels of education will end the school year before May 31. Thus, at the latest, students in Ho Chi Minh City will have a summer vacation schedule from May 31.

In fact, for many years now, schools in Ho Chi Minh City have held closing ceremonies for the school year and given students a summer vacation from May 25 onwards. Meanwhile, 9th and 12th graders will continue to review to prepare for the 10th grade entrance exam and high school graduation.
