Washing your face is an essential step in skin care, but overdoing it can be counterproductive.
Many people mistakenly believe that washing their face regularly helps keep their skin clean. However, washing your face too much can strip away the skin's natural protective oils, causing dryness, irritation, and even acne, according to Onlymyhealth (India).
Dr. Vidushi Jain, a dermatologist working in India, shared some of the harmful effects of washing your face too much.
Washing your face is an essential step in skin care, but overdoing it can be counterproductive.
Removes skin's natural oils
Washing your face too often can be harmful to your skin. When you wash your face, you strip away the skin’s natural protective oils (called sebum). These oils are important for keeping your skin hydrated and protecting it from environmental damage.
According to the journal Research Publication and Review , using too much cleanser can strip your skin of its natural oils, leaving it dry, irritated, and even producing more oil.
Dry and flaky
According to Ms. Jain, when we wash our face frequently, the natural protective oil layer of the skin is removed, causing the skin to lose necessary moisture. This makes the skin become dry, even cracked, causing discomfort.
Furthermore, a damaged skin barrier leaves the skin vulnerable to irritation and other problems.
Damaged skin barrier
Your skin has a natural protective barrier, which helps protect it from harmful elements like bacteria, pollutants, and allergens.
This barrier is made up of a combination of natural oils and proteins that help retain moisture and keep out harmful substances. When you wash your face too much, you weaken this protective layer, leaving your skin more vulnerable to damage, sensitivity, redness, and itching.
Washing your face too often can cause acne.
Overactive sebaceous glands
When your skin loses its natural oils from washing your face too often, your body automatically increases oil production to compensate. This leads to overproduction of oil.
Although this is the body's natural response to keep the skin hydrated, this excess oil can clog pores. As a result, the skin is prone to acne.
Skin prone to redness and irritation
When skin is washed too often, the skin's natural protective layer is weakened, leading to skin that is more prone to irritation and sensitivity.
External factors like weather, skin care products, or even facial movements can cause skin to become red and irritated.
In particular, if you use skin care products containing alcohol, fragrances, or acids, irritation may become more severe.
How to wash your face properly
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD), you should wash your face once in the morning, once before bed, and after sweating heavily.
In addition, Ms. Jain also recommends choosing a mild cleanser that does not contain strong chemicals or fragrances, suitable for each skin type such as oily skin, dry skin or sensitive skin.
