On the afternoon of April 6, at the regular Government press conference, in response to the press's question about whether middle and high school students will have to study two sessions per day, Permanent Deputy Minister of Education and Training Pham Ngoc Thuong said that the Ministry has not yet made an official statement on this matter.

According to Mr. Thuong, studying 2 sessions/day is not a new activity in education. In many countries around the world, when conditions are met, they organize 2 sessions/day and Vietnam will also implement it when the necessary conditions are met.

Currently, the 2018 General Education Program clearly stipulates mandatory teaching of 2 sessions/day at primary level; at middle and high school levels, the program is designed to teach 1 session/day.

In reality, teaching 2 sessions/day for primary school students is convenient. Young children study in boarding schools and are organized with appropriate curriculum. Since 2010, the Ministry of Education and Training has had guidelines for teaching 2 sessions/day for junior high schools and high schools in the direction that it is encouraged where conditions permit. Because the goal of studying 2 sessions/day is to ensure good implementation of the general education program, reduce pressure on students and be organized in a systematic manner with many educational activities, teaching and learning and forming for students qualities, abilities, skills for comprehensive development of morality, intelligence, physical fitness, aesthetics...

According to the Permanent Deputy Minister of Education and Training, the number of junior high schools and high schools teaching 2 sessions/day has increased significantly compared to 5-10 years ago. However, there are still some shortcomings such as the second session where some schools teach cultural knowledge, mainly learning knowledge rather than skills, and this puts pressure on students.

Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Training will review and re-evaluate this activity. In the coming time, the Ministry will have general national guidelines for implementation at each level of education with the view of improving the quality of formal education, reducing learning pressure for students while still ensuring effectiveness. Because the educational goal of all levels is for students to develop comprehensively, not only learning knowledge but also developing their spirit, physical strength, sports, digital citizenship skills, AI applications, foreign languages, information technology... suitable for the psychology of their age.

Deputy Minister Pham Ngoc Thuong emphasized that the Ministry of Education and Training is directing surveys and research, and has not yet announced that secondary and high schools must study two sessions. In addition, schools with conditions should organize it but must ensure the requirements and goals stated. The Ministry of Education and Training will soon issue guidance and instructions to suit reality./.
