A small passenger plane crashed in Brazil's Amazon rainforest on September 16, killing all 14 people on board, Amazonas state Governor Wilson Lima announced.
“I deeply mourn the death of 12 passengers and 2 crew members, victims of the plane crash in Barcelos on September 16,” Mr. Lima wrote on Twitter.
Local media reported that the Embraer PT-SOG aircraft took off from Manaus, the capital of Amazonas state and the largest city in the Amazon.
The pilot attempted to land in the town in heavy rain and low visibility. The plane ran off the runway and crashed, killing all passengers and crew, Amazonas state security secretary Vinicius Almeida said at a news conference.
Initial reports suggested that there were US citizens on board. However, Amazonas officials said preliminary investigations showed that all the victims were Brazilians who had come to the area to fish.
The bodies of the victims will be brought to the state capital on September 17 for identification. They cannot travel earlier because the area is off-limits to take-offs and landings at night.
A statement from the Brazilian air force said it had sent a unit from Manaus to collect information and preserve all evidence for the investigation into the crash.
“Our teams have been on scene responding since the time of the accident to provide necessary assistance,” said Governor Wilson Lima .
