In the South American derby between Brazil and Argentina (0-1) in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in South America on November 22, a riot in the stands caused the match to be interrupted for nearly 30 minutes. Famous player Messi called on the entire Argentina team to go to the locker room, but then returned to play.

Rodrygo (middle) was closely marked by Argentine players throughout the match.

When returning to the field before the match, Rodrygo stood near Messi and Rodrigo De Paul, he said: "You guys are cowards. Don't you want to play?". "We are world champions, why do you have to be cowards? Keep your mouth shut, kid," Messi angrily replied. "Now go on the field, you'll see what we can do," Rodrygo responded. "Oh, that's great, let's see. Go on, go on," Messi continued to respond harshly to his junior opponents from the Brazilian team and Real Madrid club.

Argentina's TyC Sports channel confirmed that this tense conversation was recorded by television cameras. The incident was then published in Argentine newspapers and on social media as well as on television channels. Argentine fans were very angry with Rodrygo, believing that this player had challenged Messi - their legend.

Since then, Argentine fans have attacked Rodrygo on social media. On November 24, after returning to Real Madrid to prepare for the upcoming La Liga and Champions League matches, Rodrygo posted on his personal Instagram account that he had been attacked, insulted and racially abused by Argentine fans.

Tense dialogue between Messi and Rodrygo

"Racists are still active. My social media is full of insults and all kinds of nonsense. Everyone can see it's still there!", Rodrygo wrote. He also expressed: "If we don't do what they want, if we don't behave like they think, if we wear something that makes them uncomfortable, if we don't bow when attacked, if we occupy the spaces they think are theirs, then racists will attack you with all these crimes."

Rodrygo is currently suffering from a knee injury following Brazil's defeat to Argentina. He is likely to be rested by coach Carlo Ancelotti for the game against Cadiz this weekend, but will return for the penultimate Champions League group stage match against Napoli next week.
