Fabrizio Romano ran the familiar headline "Here we go!", to confirm the deal PSSI reached with Patrick Kluivert to become the new coach of the Indonesian team.
The Indonesian team currently has a majority of naturalized players of Dutch origin, so coach Patrick Kluivert will find it very convenient to work together.
"Patrick Kluivert will sign a contract as the new head coach of the Indonesian national team, the deal has been completed. The contract option is 2 years plus 2 years extension. The presentation will take place on January 12 in Jakarta (Indonesia). Patrick Kluivert's goal is to help the Indonesian national team qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals," Fabrizio Romano wrote.
On the same day, PSSI announced the decision to fire coach Shin Tae-yong (Korea) after 5 years of cooperation.
PSSI President Erick Thohir said: "The Indonesian team needs a new coach, someone who can better implement the strategies we have set out and agreed (to attend the 2026 World Cup). He must also communicate well with all the players and do a better job than his predecessor. We have reached an agreement, and the new coach will come to Jakarta on January 11, on January 12 we will hold an announcement ceremony."
That coach is Patrick Kluivert, a famous former Dutch player who played for Ajax, AC Milan, Barcelona and Newcastle...
Currently 48 years old, Patrick Kluivert was assistant coach of the Netherlands national team from 2012 to 2014. In 2021, the former player became interim coach of the Curacao national team, and recently coached Adana Demirspor in the Super Lig (Türkiye).
During his playing career, Patrick Kluivert was a famous name, he played a total of 479 matches for clubs, scoring 206 goals. For the Dutch national team, he played 79 matches and scored 40 goals. He participated in 3 EURO tournaments and the 1998 World Cup, and was the joint top scorer of EURO 2000 with 5 goals.
It is expected that after his debut on January 12, Mr. Patrick Kluivert will soon have to list the Indonesian team for the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign in March.
In the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia, the Indonesian team is ranked 3rd in Group C with 6 points after 6 matches, equal to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and China, but ranked higher thanks to better goal difference and sub-index. Meanwhile, the Japanese team holds the top position with 16 points, followed by the Australian team (7 points).
After the failure in the AFF Cup 2024, the Indonesian team will return to compete in the third qualifying round of the 2026 World Cup in Asia next March, with matches against the Australian team on March 20 and against the Bahrain team on March 25.
