The final round and gala awards night of the " Fashion in Paris " contest took place at the French Consulate General's Palace in Ho Chi Minh City on the evening of October 20.
Competition to find young Vietnamese design talent
Fashion in Paris is a special competition organized by the French Institute in Ho Chi Minh City exclusively for future young talents of the Vietnamese fashion industry.
The contest is part of a series of activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations and 10 years of strategic partnership between France and Vietnam.
The judges of the contest include Ms. Emmanuelle Pavillon Grosser (French Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City), Ms. Emmanuelle Charrier (Director of the French Institute in Ho Chi Minh City), Mr. Nicolas Delarue (French Federation of Haute Couture and Fashion), Mr. Lucas Delattre (French Fashion Academy), Ms. Tran Nguyen Thien Huong (editor-in-chief of Harper's Bazaar Vietnam magazine) and designer Hoang Hai.

Taking place from June 2023, the competition attracted nearly 50 contestants from across the country to submit designs. The top 7 best contestants were selected to the finals to perform fashion shows and present their ideas to a panel of judges, including fashion experts from France and Vietnam.
Surpassing nearly 50 contestants and being one of the Top 7 finalists, the collection "Motherland" helped young designer Dang Thi Tra My win the competition.
The "Homeland" collection cleverly combines traditional Vietnamese cultural features such as ao dai, eel scarf, images of rice fields, lotus flowers... with elegant and liberal French fashion style.
Inspired by memories of her hometown and her beloved grandmother in Hanoi, Tra My conquered the judges with both her story and her creative designs.
In addition, Tra My also uses recycled materials. As a graduate of Ho Chi Minh City University of Architecture, majoring in fashion design , she values sustainable fashion, and artistic creation associated with the ecosystem is even more important and meaningful.
Tra My believes that the language of fashion is the key to helping young people raise environmental awareness, while also conveying gratitude to their homeland from the perspective of a young person who loves nature, country and people.
Winning the "Fashion in Paris" contest, Tra My will be sponsored for all expenses for a short-term training trip in Paris in 2024 organized by the French Fashion Academy, known as the most prestigious fashion training school in France.
French-Vietnamese cultural exchange and sustainable fashion
Second prize of the contest went to contestant Nguyen Nhat Nghi with the collection "Flower Season", using materials from old used clothes, combining the idea of ao tu than with the national flower of France, iris.
For Nhat Nghi, the competition is a rare opportunity for young fashion-loving designers to showcase their talents, ideas, and perspectives on culture and social life. She believes that sustainable fashion is not only a trend but also a responsibility for young people.

Third prize of the competition went to the collection How can we forget it by designer Pham Dao Khanh Duy and the collection Luom - Paris Olympics - Let's go! by young designer L..
Born and raised in the Central Highlands, L. conveys in the Luom collection the story of his dream journey from the Ba Na village to Paris, with designs utilizing clothes given to him by friends.
L. believes that with each piece of clothing donated and reused by redesigning to suit local people, it will bring new life and new meaning to fashion.

With the collection How Can We Forget , Pham Dao Khanh Duy conveys the message about the connection between clothes and people through memories from childhood to adulthood. Those elements are closely linked to the way each person dresses through the stages of life.
Through the use of familiar materials such as old clothes, belts, old jewelry, and woven carpets, Khanh Duy hopes to evoke some of each person's childhood memories, thereby raising public awareness about the life cycle of clothing and sustainable fashion.
