Step by step "greening"
Quang Ninh is blessed with abundant mineral resources. The mining industry has been considered a traditional strength of Quang Ninh for many decades. In addition, the natural landscape of Quang Ninh also has outstanding values, typically Ha Long Bay has been recognized by UNESCO three times as a World Natural Heritage and World Geological Heritage.
During the development process, Quang Ninh has realized that taking advantage of and exploiting potentials and strengths for economic development will create great pressure on the ecological environment. In 2011, the province began to build and implement a "greening" roadmap, transforming the growth model from "brown" to "green".
Thanks to early identification of challenges, along with the determination to innovate and make breakthroughs, after more than 10 years of efforts to transform the growth model from "brown" to "green", Quang Ninh clearly demonstrated its determination to "not trade the environment for hot growth", development always linked between economic benefits and environmental protection.
In 2023, Quang Ninh has the highest provincial Green Index in the country with a total score of 26 points for 4 component indices. Of which, the index for reducing environmental pollution and negative impacts of climate change reached 7.41 points; the index for ensuring compliance with minimum environmental standards reached 6.18 points; the index for the leadership role of the provincial government in promoting green practices reached 6.68 points; policies and services to support businesses in environmental protection reached 5.73 points. Notably, 4/4 component indices increased in points compared to 2022.
For sustainable development
Quang Ninh is shifting from traditional industrial park development planning to developing an "industrial ecosystem" with the requirement of linking industrialization with service and urbanization; between industrialization and environmental protection according to the principle of circular economy; between industrialization and urbanization and improving the quality of life of the people.
The locality has focused on attracting projects to industrial parks and industrial clusters to form an ecosystem based on favorable geographical distance; focusing on promoting investment in large economic groups in the world that are capable of attracting many satellite manufacturing enterprises, forming a global value chain.
In the tourism sector, the province has invested in and developed infrastructure for tourism as well as diversified tourism products in a synchronous, modern and attractive manner to create breakthrough developments with its own identity. These include projects such as the Provincial Museum - Library, Planning Palace, Provincial Fair and Exhibition, Ha Long Flower Park... Along with that, the province has also attracted many strategic investors with prestige, brands, and great economic potential to invest in the tourism and service sectors, such as Sun Group, Vingroup..., with many international-class tourism products, helping to elevate Quang Ninh tourism.
Along with economic development, Quang Ninh has been doing a good job of protecting the environment and responding to climate change. The province is very determined in relocating small-scale industrial establishments that cause environmental pollution, mobilizing investment resources for waste collection and treatment using advanced, environmentally friendly technology.
Applying modern technology and thoroughly burning waste, Khe Giang Waste Treatment Plant is the only unit that processes domestic solid waste in Quang Yen town, Uong Bi city, the west of Ha Long city and Dong Trieu town, helping localities ensure environmental sanitation.
Quang Ninh is encouraging businesses to participate in the circular economic model to contribute to increasing business value, while reducing resource exploitation, reducing waste treatment costs, minimizing environmental pollution, with the goal of ending exploitation and closing all quarries for common construction materials by 2025 to restore the environment.
In aquaculture, Quang Ninh has basically completed the goal of replacing styrofoam buoys with environmentally friendly HDPE plastic buoys. Technical standards related to aquaculture activities in cages, rafts, and platforms using buoys have also been issued.
The synchronous implementation of solutions has been helping Quang Ninh make a strong shift in economic restructuring towards a green and sustainable growth model. Thereby, helping Quang Ninh become one of the leading localities in the country in environmental protection indicators associated with economic development according to the green growth model.
