On the occasion of General Secretary and President To Lam's attendance at the Future Summit and the High-level General Debate of the 79th United Nations General Assembly, UN Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix spoke to VNA reporters in New York about Vietnam's contributions to the world's largest multilateral organization. Below is the content of the interview. * Vietnam is increasingly becoming an active and responsible member of the UN. This is also the first time General Secretary and President To Lam has attended the High-level Week of the UN General Assembly . Could you please share your assessment of Vietnam's contributions to the UN, especially peacekeeping activities in recent years? - UN Under-Secretary-General Jean-Pierre Lacroix: We are very pleased with Vietnam's practical contributions to the UN, including peacekeeping activities, not only because of what has been achieved but also because of the potential to enhance cooperation between Vietnam and the UN. Vietnam has deployed forces to participate in UN peacekeeping missions, a level 2 hospital in South Sudan and recently a technical unit to the UN mission in the Abyei region. The number of Vietnamese soldiers in peacekeeping missions is increasing, including men, women and police forces, both in the field and at headquarters. In addition, we also highly appreciate the quality of Vietnam's peacekeeping forces. I think these are good developments, demonstrating the excellent level of cooperation between Vietnam and the UN. * Do you have any suggestions to further promote the cooperation between Vietnam and the UN, especially in the field of peacekeeping? - The UN wishes to expand and strengthen cooperation with Vietnam. On the occasion of the High-Level Week of the 79th UN General Assembly, I met and discussed a number of directions with the working delegation of the Minister of National Defense and the Minister of Public Security of Vietnam. We have many good ideas to further develop our cooperation, such as training and capacity building, and we also agree that there are many opportunities and see the need to strengthen our cooperation, starting with Vietnam’s willingness to deploy police units to participate in UN peacekeeping operations. The UN looks forward to promoting this relationship with Vietnam.
The UN currently has very active, effective and experienced peacekeeping operations. Vietnam is not only ready to continue participating but also to increase its contributions and support to the missions. The UN is also reviewing its peacekeeping operations to adapt to current challenges in the world. And we look forward to Vietnam's cooperation in this common effort. It is expected that there will be a ministerial-level meeting in the near future to focus on discussing future peacekeeping operations. The UN hopes that by then we will have good ideas to deploy peacekeeping missions effectively and in accordance with the current international context. * How would you rate the importance of the Future Summit in the current international context? - The Future Summit is a very important event and I am very pleased that the conference has adopted the Future Treaty. This has huge implications for the UN’s role in peacekeeping and security, especially in the face of current global challenges such as climate change, conflict, security, inequality, lack of progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and transnational crime… All of these need to be addressed through more effective multilateral and joint action. The conference is also important for peacekeeping, because peacekeeping is an instrument that needs to be backed by multilateral efforts and greater political support. Missions need to be more prioritised and realistic about what peacekeeping can do.
