Associate Professor Doan Van Dien - former Principal of Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry - spent 2 billion VND to establish a scholarship fund for poor students.
Sharing about this decision, Associate Professor Doan Van Dien said that 20 years ago, he had in mind the idea of establishing a scholarship fund to help poor but studious students. He confided this idea to his wife and received enthusiastic support.
"I don't have the means to do everything, but at least a small scholarship fund can encourage children to become adults and build the country," he said.
The 89-year-old Associate Professor said that at first, he planned to give a sum of money to the Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry every year for the school to give to poor students. But after thinking it over, he worried that when he was a hundred years old, his children might or might not continue this work. Therefore, he decided to spend 2 billion VND to establish a scholarship fund in his name.
Associate Professor Dien entrusted this money entirely to Ho Chi Minh City University of Agriculture and Forestry. Every year, the school will give it to poor students according to the criteria that both sides discussed when establishing the fund.
“Contributing to future generations of students is the most precious reward in my life,” Associate Professor Dien said. He also hopes that a portion of the fund will be dedicated to teachers, because they are the ones who contribute to teaching students.
Regarding the source of the money, Associate Professor Dien said that this was the sweat and effort he had saved over many years. After retiring from a public school, he spent some time as a principal of a private school, so he had more funds.
"My pension is only 6 million VND, but I think knowing enough is enough to live enough" - the Associate Professor shared.
