(NLDO) - The event aims to raise awareness of voluntary blood donation and join hands to contribute to supplementing Vietnam's blood reserves.
On the morning of January 17, the US Embassy in Hanoi and the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion organized the 10th annual voluntary blood donation program with the theme "Connecting hearts, lighting up faith". The program also has special significance as it takes place on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Vietnam and the US.
At the event, US Deputy Ambassador Courtney Beale said: "We are all aware that the demand for blood is very high right now. Especially before Tet and according to the Vietnam Blood Center, we currently need 80,000 units of blood to have a stable blood supply. Therefore, we really want to contribute a part to Vietnam's blood supply."
US Deputy Ambassador Courtney Beale affirmed: "This blood donation event is even more meaningful because this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the US and Vietnam. As the two countries celebrate an important event, we really want to be a good partner of Vietnam, as well as a member of the community in Hanoi. Today, we have many volunteers from the US Embassy as well as the area around the Embassy participating in blood donation, contributing to the community in Hanoi and helping friends and partners in Vietnam."
Speaking at the program, Deputy Director of the National Blood Center, Dr. Nguyen Ba Khanh, sent his thanks to the US Embassy: "Every year, on Tet occasions like this, the US Embassy actively organizes blood donation activities at the agency. These drops of blood make a very important contribution to the amount of blood used to treat patients."
He also expressed his hope that many agencies and organizations in localities across the country will join hands to promote the spirit of humanitarian blood donation, while contributing to strengthening the good relationship between the two countries.
Since 2012, the U.S. Embassy has coordinated with the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to organize the annual Blood Donation Day to recognize the National Blood Center’s efforts to increase blood product reserves through voluntary blood donation and to educate the public about the importance of this activity.
This January, the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion is expected to need about 40,000 units of blood. With its proactiveness and efforts, the Institute has prepared 33,000 - 35,000 units. However, compared to the treatment needs, the Institute still needs to add 5,000 - 7,000 more units of blood.
The National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion continues to call on people with a spirit of volunteerism to actively participate in blood donation activities organized by the Institute or local agencies, to ensure enough necessary blood supply, helping people feel secure during Tet.
