Nam O fishing village not only has beautiful scenery, but is also famous for its royal fish sauce, seaweed (sea jam) and 700 years of historical and cultural sediments.

Although rich in natural resources, scenic spots and cultural legends, the lives of Nam O people are still difficult, due to mainly near-shore exploitation, affecting aquatic resources and people's livelihoods, with the potential risk of depletion.

Nam O snack street attracts many tourists

Mr. Nguyen Ha Bac, Secretary of Lien Chieu District Party Committee, shared that the issue of changing jobs for fishermen, aiming at sustainable and effective exploitation, has always been of concern to the locality, which is struggling to find solutions.

Last April, Lien Chieu District, the Department of Tourism and Trung Thuy Group implemented a program to support career conversion for Nam O residents, including donating 50 sales carts to households doing business at Nam O Snack Street with a total value of 500 million VND.

Trung Thuy Group also supported 600 million VND for 50 disadvantaged households to have capital to do business at Snack Street, or create livelihoods, study and receive vocational training, and have a proactive and stable source of income instead of depending on traditional seafood fishing, in the context of depleted aquatic resources.

According to a survey by the People's Committee of Lien Chieu District, the Nam O coastal fishing industry usually operates from 4 - 8 am. Fishermen want to work the rest of the day but are mainly unskilled workers with unstable income.

Therefore, the birth of Nam O Snack Street has solved the problem of "leisure fishing", suitable for people to develop the local economy, such as entertainment and culinary services to increase income. At the same time, with the characteristics of local people, Nam O people have a high sense of responsibility in preserving the tourism environment, playing the role of ambassadors of the land rich in culture and products.

In addition, Nam O Snack Street is being deployed synchronously, along with Nguyen Tat Thanh Street Park, contributing to creating a new destination and tourism product, attracting visitors this summer.

Opened on April 28, Nam O Snack Street operates from 6pm to 11pm every day, including holidays. Thanks to meeting the needs of the community, this specialized street operates effectively.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Tam, 43 years old, living in Hoa Hiep Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District, said: "Before, I just struggled at home to cook and help my husband fish. My income was unstable because there were not many fish left near the shore. Since receiving support to join Nam O Snack Street, I have had a cart selling herring salad and specialties such as fish sauce, Nam O sea jam... my initial income was very good, especially on weekends, when Nam O people are very crowded."

Mr. Nguyen Dang Huy, Chairman of Lien Chieu District People's Committee, shared that the success of the career conversion model for Nam O people is a premise for research and application to a number of fishing villages, in order to protect aquatic resources and promote sustainable local economic development.
