Furthermore, diabetes increases the risk of many complications such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and narrowing of blood vessels. Therefore, disease prevention is a major global public health concern.

Muscle strength reduces the risk of diabetes by up to 44%
Scientists from the University of Hong Kong conducted a large-scale epidemiological study to explore the potential health benefits of high muscle strength in preventing type 2 diabetes in genetically at-risk individuals.
The study used data from 141,848 participants from the UK Biobank. Participants were an average age of 56.6, had no diabetes at baseline, and were followed for more than seven years.
During follow-up, there were 4,743 new cases of diabetes.
The results, published in the medical journal BMC Medicine, found that higher muscle strength reduced the risk of diabetes by up to 44%, even in people with a genetic risk of diabetes, according to the medical news site Medical Express.
The study highlights the importance of maintaining or improving muscle strength as a strategy to prevent diabetes.
Furthermore, the team found that muscle strength can overcome the effect of genetic risk on diabetes onset.
Notably, the results showed that people with high genetic risk but high muscle strength had a lower risk of diabetes.

Older adults should do muscle strengthening exercises to prevent disease.
The new findings highlight the important role of maintaining or increasing muscle strength as a key strategy for preventing diabetes in middle-aged and older adults, regardless of their genetic risk level, including those at high genetic risk, said study leader Dr Wang Mengyao, from the University of Hong Kong School of Public Health.
Co-author Professor Youngwon Kim, from the University of Hong Kong School of Public Health, added: The new study supports the advice that older adults should do muscle-strengthening exercises at least two days a week to prevent diabetes, according to Medical Express.
What are muscle strengthening exercises?
According to the UK National Health Service (NHS), muscle-strengthening exercises include lifting weights, resistance band training, climbing stairs, walking uphill, cycling, jumping, push-ups, sit-ups and squats.
