Now, new research published in the scientific journal Plos One has found that a popular beverage can do just that, according to News Medical.

Scientists from MCBI Research Laboratories Inc. and ITO Central Research Institute EN, LTD. (Japan) studied the effects of matcha green tea on cognitive function and sleep quality in older adults over a 12-month period.

A total of 99 people aged 60 to 85 participated in the trial, of whom 64 had early signs of cognitive decline and 35 had mild cognitive impairment.

Participants were divided into two groups: an intervention group and a control group. The intervention group received 2 grams of matcha green tea per day for 12 months. Participants in the control group received placebo capsules identical to the matcha capsules.

Participants' cognitive function and sleep quality were measured at baseline and at follow-up visits after 3, 6, 9, and 12 months.

The results found that drinking matcha green tea significantly increased social cognition. At the same time, those who drank matcha green tea for 12 months also improved sleep quality.

The results found a significant positive shift between social cognition and cognitive impairment scores in all participants at baseline and after 12 months. The effect was particularly strong in those who were beginning to show signs of cognitive decline, according to News Medical.

Matcha green tea powder contains several bioactive compounds, including epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), theanine and caffeine, which are known to have beneficial effects on cognitive function and mood.

The research could have implications: Drinking green tea daily could be a simple but effective strategy to boost cognition, improve sleep quality and prevent dementia.

However, future studies are needed to fully explore the long-term effects of matcha green tea on cognitive decline.
